BTA Question

I have a few BTA in my tank, just today Jan yelled for me to look and there is a very small BTA around the size of a thumbnail.
With just one row of tenicals.
Is this how they split ?
I have never seen it before ????

If thats what you are describing, its aiptasia, its a pest.

I hear vinegar shots will get rid of them (from a needle), Kalkwasser/lime water, certain fish will eat them, there are a few other things you could try.. just read up.

I have never dealt with them but I understand that they reproduce quickly and can be quite a paint to get rid of.

I have used Joe's Juice and a few peppermint shrimp and they seem to keep it under control. Once they are in your tank they are hard to get rid of totally....so early detection and action is best.

This in a quarter size BTA.

If you ask Dylan, the owner of Aqua Pets in Omaha, Joe's Juice is definitely NOT what you want to use. It does not kill them fast enough, and actually leads to a spread of aiptasia, according to him. Instead of one larger one, you will have lots of small ones. It has been my experience that he is right, but he does maintanence on over 100 tanks around the Omaha area, so I tend to take his word. He now recomends Muriatic acid injected into the pest. Myself, I bought a Copper Banded Butterfly instead. It works fantastic.

When my BTA split they are usually split in half, and after they split they look pretty deformed for a while. Are you sure its a BTA and not a Majano? They look a lot like BTA's but they dont get very big and spread very quickly. Heres a pic of some.
