BTA Split - sort of...

I bought an anemone last year around the end of April. Somehow it got injured and I nursed it back to health. Since then it eats well and has quadrupled in size. Yesterday, while I was cleaning the tank, I decided to move some rocks around. When I grabbed the rock the anemone was on and picked it up I realized too late that it was attached to another rock as well and it tore. I had no idea this guy was splitting because it was very sneaky about it. It seems that it had planted one foot on a rock below and out of sight from us and one remained on the original rock.

The LFS assured me that it most likely would be just fine and to leave it be since it was still connected by a small strand. I did as they suggested and left it alone. Today it finished the process of splitting and I now have two anemones. So far they both still look pretty normal (i.e. inflated) although the clone does have a very ragged edge and no real mouth. Hopefully with time it will develop one? The parent anemone has a jagged edge as well but it does not look as bad as the clone does. This is the first anemone I have ever had and so this cloning process is all new to me.

Anyway, please check out my photos below and tell me what you think.

Thanks,
Dawn

Hi Lady, great pictures.
They both look very good to me and the ragged edge will heal over in time, around a week or so,
they do not develope mouths for around a week to two weeks so dont try to feed them.
Keep your water quality up, do a water change, 10% works good.
It also helps them to heal up.
Click my little red house for more information on them splitting and pictures .
They are looking very good tho so I think they will do great, congratulations.

Well this certainly sounds good. Thanks for the reply. I will let you know how they are doing in a few weeks. This moring when I went to check on the tank I found the female clown in the clone and the male clown in the parent. Me thinks they are confused. :)

Well, you could do it my way...just pull them apart with your bare hands....but I wouldn't suggest it. It felt really gross when they tore apart.

Here is an updated photo of the clone anemone (before and after). It is doing well as is the parent anemone. I guess I was lucky and did no permanent harm. It is truly amazing how these guys can heal themselves.
