Per the specs below is the Bubble King Double Cone 150 looking like a well-balanced skimmer?

Thinking about getting one for my new DSA NEO 105 build.

Personally, I really like the BK skimmers. Their build quality is second to none and their pumps are great too. I have an Alpha 300 which was designed and built by Royal Exclusiv/BK and it has been a fantastic skimmer. One of the best I've owned. While it's not the double cone, I am confident that most anything BK builds is built extremely well and will work very well too including the Double Cone 150. If I were to replace my skimmer, the only one I would consider would be the BK Supermarin.

If you want good information on the BK Double Cone, I'd suggest posting in the Premium Aquatics section here in the vendor forum area or giving Jeremy at Premium Aquatics a call. He does his due diligence with all the skimmers he sells and I am reasonably certain he's tested this one.

Now be prepared for lots of advice on every other skimmer out there from people who probably never owned a BK skimmer! :lol:
 
I have a skimmer just like that one but I have never owned a BK so my advice is LOL just kidding.
Nice skimmer I did not know they were even making that model.
 
Subscribed. I'm almost positive the pump will be quiet, as I've heard Red Dragons are some of the most quiet skimmer pumps out there.

This does look similar to the Vertex Omega 150.

I think it's going to be too large for my Midi, but I want one :D
 
I just hooked up the BK Double Cone 200 model on Thursday. It makes no sound at all, I don't mean it's quiet, it literally makes no sound whatsoever.

It's too early for me to rate performance, but it's skimming already and seems to be very stable.

The build quality is very sturdy and you can take the entire thing apart for cleaning.

Not true! You can get the same motor block which is actually made by Laguna for a fraction of the cost. They come in the Laguna pond pumps. Even the bigger ones like my skimmer uses are under $150. I keep a spare on hand just in case but I've got 3 years on my two Red Dragons on my skimmer and they have not skipped a beat.
 
slief, from my understanding there are certain modifications involved, and thus the main reason I steered away from BK when it was my time to upgrade to a higher end skimmer.

Currently using the Reef octopus POV DC2 and the skimmate is as black as it gets.

The only difference is that the Red Dragon has a base on it that is glued in place. You could either remove that base from the RD and glue it to the Laguna which has no base on it or you could buy a new base for the Laguna from So. Cal Tropical Outlet.

Having said that, the Red Dragon/Laguna motor block is one of the best out there and their failure rate is pretty slim. Like I said, I've got 3 years on my two Red Dragons and they have not skipped a beat while providing absolutely silent reliable and efficient operation. Expensive they may be but most that know the pumps, know they are as good as it gets. At least that has been my personal experience and I've owned countless skimmers over the years.

Seems to be performing well, it's producing this each day. I might adjust it a little more wet. It took about a week to break in. Then has been running great for 4 weeks now.

BK is really nice in general, Im not sold on the cones, but if you wanna cone the BK would probably be the top one out there, with ATB in close second place. The RD pump might be based of the laguna and its a good backup, but the BK pumps have high end metal in them where it counts. Thats the pump/price difference.

Not sure what a DSA Neo 105 is, but if its 105 gallons and you add in more for the sump, then your tank is bigger than the rating listed. 350 liters = 92 US gallons. I would probably step it up one model- probably more an issue on how your gonna stock the 105 gallon tank. The BK is surely conservatively rated vs most other brands.
 
I have a bk 300 deluxe dead silent and it's steady. My buddy's got a double cone and i almost prefer it to the 300 because it produces very fine bubbles and good skimmate. Maybe grass is always green on the other side.

Huh??? I have a spare Laguna as a backup for my RD 1500's. The only metal that counts when it comes to the motor block would be the threaded nuts on the motor block body where the volute mounts to the block. The ones on the RD are titanium if I am not mistaken but can be easily transferred to the Laguna. You don't use the Laguna impeller, you use the RD impeller (which has the titanium shaft), RD Volute and RD metal components such as the screws and nuts that hold the volute to the motor block. They all transfer directly onto the Laguna block. Other than that, the Laguna motor block is completely sealed with the only difference that I am aware of being a longer power cord on the Laguna and the mounting base. The cost disparity between the RD and the Laguna has to do with the custom RD impeller, RD Volute with adjustable nozzle, RD base and of course the fact that it is imported from Laguna into Europe and then exported from Europe. If you know something more about the internals of the motor block itself, I would be very interested in hearing but as far as I am aware, the block itself is identical short of the RD add on stuff.

The double cone 150 skimmer is nice but not sure it's worth 2.5 times as much as a Vertex Omega 130. The Sicce blocks on the Omegas are as good as the Askoll ones on the RD pumps and they are extremely quiet skimmers too.
