Buddies new tank has ich, few questions

We've read over all the different methods and through about a million threads. We wanted to go over what he's doing and if you guys think this will be enough.

Setup is pretty standard I guess: 120g, 200lbs live rock, 100lbs sand, 40 or 50g sump using 2 100 micron socks, 2 750 mag-drive return pumps. Fish: 2 black perc's, 1 Chevron Tang, 1 Blue Hip Tang, 1 Flame Angle, 2 goby's and 1 damsel.(cause he can't catch it!)

Tank has been up for about 2 months and with the exception of the ich, everything has been spot on. Heck his Corals and coraline under Compacts outgrow most aquariums I see with halide lights.(all softy's of course)

He got the ich from some fish he got at a local pet store and didn't do a quarnteen tank because he didn't have the room for one.

He doesn't want to hurt the inverts or corals, so can't do copper treatment. Doesn't want to tear enitre tank down to catch fish and do a quarnteen for a month.

Here is what he's doing, what other things can he try....

1. Feeds 5-10 drops of Kent Garlic Extreem 2 times a day per feeding. Onto Formula 1 and Formula 2 Dry Flakes

2. 36W Coralife UV Sterilizer, with Mag-Drive 350 pump pushing about 280gph for parasite treatment. This UV Sterilizer is rated for a 500 gallon tank. Currently pulling and dumping water from sump back to sump. Will be pulling from sump and dumping to tank tomorrow.

3. Read mixed reviews, but none bad. Kick-Ich.

4. Prior to doing Kick-ich, he did a 25% water change and sucked all the gravel and cleaned out as much of what he could from the sump.

5. While couldn't catch all the fish, He did manage to freshwater dip for 7-8 minutes his two black perc clowns and Blue Hip Tang. Blue Hip Tang had the worst break out of all the fish.

Aside from the Garlic, which hasn't done anything in 2 weeks of treatment, everything else started today.

What other things can we do to help get this tank under control.

Wondering if water temp has anything to do with it? He lowered his salinity from 1.025 to 1.022. Doesn't want to go too low, but figured this would help the fish a little.

Thanks!

Doesn't want to tear enitre tank down to catch fish and do a quarnteen for a month.

Unfortunately that is the only reliable option. The other options that he's persuing require a measure of pure luck.

Others might disagree, but I don't know if I would bother with the fresh water dip. It will stress the fish, and as long as the ich is in the tank, they will just get re-infected.

Ditto with the water changes - other than water changes always being a good thing, I doubt it will help this situation much.

I think the garlic and kick-ich (I have no experience with this) is your best bet if you can't catch the fish. I would try to keep the fish as healthy as possible so that they can fight off invection until they are ich free.

I guess if one get's heavily hit by the ich, it might be better to give it a frsh water bath so that it can start over. So maybe I was wrong initially - but I would definately balance the level of ich invection vs. the stress of the fresh water bath.

Best of luck.

It's my tank

It's my tank

Finally got a log on. Too bad my first post will be about my ich problem. :(

I'm also treating the tank with Vita-chem and Selcon. I am really wanting to make my water quality better in addition to trying to boost my fish's immune system.

Just put in day 3 of kich ich yesterday. The only fish in the tank that had noticeable ich today was my blue hip tang. I tried my hardest to catch her for a fresh water dip, but couldn't. She's on to me! I know ich is on a cycle, so I'm curious to see what happens over the next few days. Really hopping the UV sterilizer wipes out a lot of the ich when it's floating around.

Also... My KH and Alk are all a little high and my calcium was only 225ppm. I am trying to up the Calcium. Was told to me that raising the calcium should help lower my KH/Alk. PH was spot on at 8.3. Everything else also looked good.

Thanks!
Jason

Update: so far so good I think. All the fish appear to be clear of ich and have been clean for 3 days. My Blue Hip Tang still has ich on her, but all the others are perfect. I've tried to catch her to do another fresh water bath, but no luck.

Kich-Ich appears to be having an effect on all my corals, and I'm hoping I don't lose any, but they certainly do not look as healthy as they were. I was dosing 10oz which is for 125G and I'm going to reduce the dosage down to 8oz. I figure Rock displacement etc, probably has me lower.

I do have a question. After the final treatment of Kich-Ich, if everything looks good in the tank, how long do I leave the tank alone with out a water change? and then throw in the carbon to pull the medicine out. The directions tell you when and how to put the stuff in the tank, and how to get it out, but not when to pull it out. :)

Thanks,
Jason
