Budget skimmer recommendations

I've been out of the game for a while, and I know there are a ton of new products out there. So I consider myself being back in newbieland!

I am planning my build. I am going to custom build an 18" cube with an additional 2" overflow in back.

My sump will also be custom built, so exact footprint requirements are nonexistent. I can build the sump around the skimmer.

With all that being said, I am on a budget. No set dollar amount, but the cheaper the better. I do not want to sacrifice functionality though. I want the best, cheap, smallish footprint skimmer on the market.

Cones are interesting to me, although they are always too expensive. I also like the DIY avast cone kit, but again, it's a bit more than I want to spend.

Thanks!

Bubble magus makes a good low cost skimmer. I have one on my nano and it does very well

Have you looked at the new Eshopps line (spelling ?) No personal experience running them but have seen them at work in a LFS & they seem to pull out copious crud. My impression they e positioned the product as a value brand. Maybe worth a look. I think I saw an owner thread in the Equipment forum.

When I was looking the Bubble Magnus Curve 5 was one of the cheapest at $200. It's worked fine for me so far. My biggest hurtle has been learning how to dial it in and what causes it to overflow occasionally.

I have the SCA 302 which is just slightly bigger. It pulls a ton of dark skimmate. Great skimmer at a decent price.

There is an entire thread in the equipment forum about the 301 and what mods can be done to it to make it better.
