building a new hood

i'm gonna tackle building a new hood out of contiboard (laminated chip board) would this be a problem if it got wet, is there anythig i can put on it to water proof it to stop the water getting to the wood and any building suggestions i might need

Killz primer, 3 coats or so.

If it's only a canopy and not supporting too much weight, I would imagine that painting the inside and any exposed areas on the bottom touching the tank with a good primer and sealer would be fine. That would keep the grain visible on the outside.

What pine finish?

well its a kind a chipboard coated in a pine / beech finish material
