Building Big Bertha: 800G

Hey folks,

I'm proud to introduce my cheap-o tank stand solution:

Here's what I like about it:

* cheap,
* no wood or metal anywhere in it,
* spaced off the floor with little legs so water spills can flow by/through,
* required minimal effort.

I had to use some spacers and hooks in my wall to give it the support it needs to prevent racking and shearing, but that was easy:

(By the way, one of the best things about SIP walls is that you can just drill stuff right into 'em. No need for anchors, lag bolts, or any of that mumbo-jumbo!)

And 100lb of live rock from Reefer Madness came this morning, only 16 hours after I placed the order yesterday. Here's dog 1 giving his stamp of approval...

...and mermaid aiding with the deployment:

Everything seems reasonably stable -- cross your fingers -- and I'm just kind of hanging out waiting on Aquatronica to help me debug my messed up power strip. I also have to plumb in the tank that goes on that stand (it's in place, holding water, and ready to roll) and organize the rat's nest of wires that are running all over the room right now.

All in all, pretty okay, I think. :)

great shot of the mermaid, and was it hard getting newspaper off LR. what exactly are you placing on the stand? what is the tank next to the stand? everything looks good to me, who says you have to spend a lot to make anything work.

I hate rock packed in newspaper! sometimes it comes out like paper mache. :( Kudos on the mermaid...definitely a keeper! :D

Thanks Bart! It wasn't hard getting the newspaper off, but this stuff was still wet and strong. I think if it had had time to dry out some it could have been harder. The styrofoam bits were far more annoying, but also easy to remove. I set up three leftover IO buckets with SW and had a dunking chain. Easy as pie.

The stand holds the refugium, and the tank next to the stand on the floor is the grow-out tank. That tank will most likely go on a stand of the same design, right where you see the tank sitting on the floor now. I haven't committed my floorspace to putting it there just yet, though, so that's kinda why it's hanging out. I'll take pictures of the tanks and stuff when I get them plumbed in.

what 's the weight rating on those plastic racks, I would hate to see those things break down due to changes in weight, if an when the power fails and the filtration tanks fill. Interesting idea though, hope it works out. Great looing build and I really like the way the area around the tank it finished. Very nice build and tank. Good luck and enjoy, I'm a little jealous as my fill day is still so far away.

yes, i agree, those stands look rather flimsy to support a tank full of water. i would check with the manufacturer as to carrying capacity.

They claim they're rated to 1000 pounds each; there are two them supporting the six foot long tank. The refugium will be continuously full of sand and water, so a power failure won't change the load much.

Thanks for the compliments! Do you have a thread for your tank yet?

Hi Ben,
Looks good. Is this tank going to be a reef or FOWLR?

Hey Steve, this'll be a full reef tank.

They're pretty amazingly strong, but you've gotta shore up their flimsy failure modes. Stand-alone they have a huge tendency to wobble and shift in place.

ok over 100 things can be done, but Ben chose 1 out of the 100.
:lol: same with me, looks can be deceiving:cool: i don't believed anything is wrong with the picture.:rollface: maybe a few more wire ties should do the job.:D still looking good Ben.
