Building Big Bertha: 800G

Wow, this is quite the tank build. I abosolutely love how the tank is positioned in your wall, and think I may try to encorporate something similar in my own home.

What I did want to mention is in regards to Tabitha. If she is from Hawaii, the red in her doral fin is probably normal. Many yellow tangs from Hawaii do have a red-orange coloring in the webbing of their dorsal fins. I couldn't really make out what red you were taking about in the previous photos, but I'm thinking this may be what you were refering to.

I'm excited to see how things progress for you. I think you've done a phenomenal job so far, and its probably only going to get better!

Thank you all for your kind comments. Yes, Tabitha is from Hawaii, and after a bunch of comments by others here and having looked at other pictures of these fish, I came to the same conclusion -- it's probably normal. Interestingly, I believe that it has reduced somewhat over the last few weeks as she has gotten settled in. She has the place to herself for now, but that's because I can't find someone who can send me four or five purple tangs at this point. :)

A group of purple tangs! Nice choice for a tank of this size! Challenging but not too crazy!

Isn't that always the case, as soon as you need something its nowhere to be found! :)

Although I'd love to take credit, the idea came from others in this very thread. I think it's super-cool... but I am wary of being able to get that many same-sized tangs in one fell swoop. I'm willing to be patient, I suppose.... :)

Ben,

You could put in an order to LA and stipulate you want x number at whatever size you feel comfortable with. Then you gettheir arive alive guarantee too. Then they can get your order together and shipped them at one time. Just a thought!

You might check out Aqua Imports. Mike handles placing special orders for me and lets me pick them up while they're still in the bags from the wholesaler.

Can't wait to see the school of purples and yellows! That is my dream, I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm glad you're running with it. Patience will definitly be worth it.

Any new pics?

Hi all!

No new pics, but not much has changed except I've left the tank dark for an extended period to kill off a lot of the hair algae. The good news is that this morning LiveAquaria called me to tell me that they got in some purple tangs. I was under the impression, from speaking to them by email a few weeks ago, that they "have a hard time getting these fish in at this time of the year" and that I might "not expect to be able to acquire more than one or two at any specific time."

That was, until they called me and told me that they had TWO HUNDRED that came out of quarantine this morning.

So, the school of purples and yellows will be here Thursday morning. You can expect some pictures sometime after that. I probably will not turn on the lights on Thursday, and maybe not on Friday depending on how they are looking. I will be gone all Labor Day weekend. :(

Yeah, I know... :( If past experience holds, though, even if I were to turn on the lights on Friday, the fish will just go hide in the rocks.

They are on the plane as I type this... so I'll report back tomorrow.

(No, not 90 :) ... just 4!)
