Building Big Bertha: 800G

yeah the deltec FR1020 is crazy over priced, and i was dumb enough to buy it of course. i didn't know any better in the beginning. i admit its well built but if i had to do it again i build my own.

Jon,
A 500GPM circulator with a faux rock base to keep it from blowing around the tank. Its only half horse too. It'll be used as a small "powerhead" in a 335,000g tank:D

I'd like to hear more about that pump. Who is it made by and where did you get it? It looks like just the thing for a future project I'm contemplating.

Ben,
Youve got room for this in your little 800g tank:D No closed loop needed. 500GPM @0.5HP. Its camoflauged to blend in with the rockwork of the coldwater tank its going in. We can throw some aragocrete on it and it'll be reef ready:)

I found pumps like that at Aquatic Ecosystems from 0.5 to 2 hp. They're made of SS and have a zinc sacrificial anode. You indicated that this pump used a magnesium anode. I found a site that sells magnesium anodes, but it says they are for "freshwater use only". Is the tank this is going in salt or fresh? Any idea why they would say the magnesium is for fresh only?

How the heck do they keep even smallish - larger fish from getting sucked into that prop!

That's cool!

Bax - I don't know...If the tank were large enough, you could build a larger housing to reduce changes of getting something sucked in. In my tank though, the pump would take up half the tank even at it's current size!

Oh yea! That's definitely a pool size tank item ... but it's cool.

I guess a cage is probably a must on that puppy!

The prop is covered with the tines. We also wrapped the whole thing in 1/4" mesh. Definitely NOT for a home tank:D It would spit your corals out the other side.

Not sure why it stated the Mg was not for SW. We wanted the Mg since its dissolution would not foul the tank. Not that is matters much, the tank is 335,000G.

The AES aerators are Kasko Marine IIRC, and through the grapevine have heard they have reliability issues in seawater. The one I chose is from Italy, is 2x the price, but have proven reliable.

Back to Bens Monster, not mine:wavehand:

Hey guys!

I'm still alive, and so is Bertha!

Everything is doing really quite well, though I have been traveling a lot and haven't had much free time to make any progress.

Bertha has finally started to grow "things" in earnest. This includes coralline, some really neat lettuce-like macro algae, all manner of feather dusters and sponges, and of course some nuisance valonia and aiptasia. All of the hair algae is completely obliterated.

The fish seem healthy. Still zero water changes (!). Chemistry seems stable. The Bubble King is still performing hero work sucking out probably 10 gallons of brown gunk a week.

I will take some snapshots of the tank for a post before Monday if I can. After that, it's back on the road for nearly three straight weeks. (And a SERIOUS test of Bertha's stability!)

That's quite part of the pacific ocean you got there!

Loving it!!! It's HUGE!

More pics man haha

keep up the good work bbrantley
