Building New Tank

Okay So i have decided to move out of the nano and into something a little bigger. A 29 gallon that i bought of here. So hopefully this will be a success and i am seeking all the advice that i can off here to set this up. i just got through ordering 25 lbs of dry fiji rock off of macro rock. That has been first step.

2nd step Need a ballast. 1 bulb i am figuring enough to have a 150-175 w Any suggestions.

3rd Sand: Any suggestions here would be great. I would prefer not to by a whole ton of live sand instead just use what i have in my nano to get it started. Just looking for a slightly cheaper way.

3rd Need advice or a design on sump. I am going to be putting a 10 gallon sump under the stand. It will eventually have a skimmer just not at first. So i need some help understanding how to set this up. I have been looking but have not found anything yet that really lays it out for me. So i am going to really need some help here.

4th And i also have a refuigum that hangs on the back. Going to need some hep one what and exactly how this works and the best way to set it up.

I think that is all i have to ask for now just looking to gather supplies , ideas, web sites, and successes.

i have a 10 gallon sump.....i'll sell it for $10 if you want it...and if you'll be attending the next meeting, i can bring it with me

the sump doesnt have a refugium built in, but luckily you have one already...basically it has two sections...divided by a bubble trap...one section for the equipment (heaters, skimmer)...and the other section for the return pump

As far as sand goes, if you're wanting cheap, just go get some white play sand. All you have to do is make sure you rinse it really well (preferably with RO or RO/DI water) to get all the dirt out. Several of us (myself included) have used it with no problems at all.

If you are looking for info about sumps, look no further than here.

Have a read through there. It answered most, if not all, of my questions when I first started putting my current tank together. :)

Gsusfreak, is the sump an actual 10 gallon tank or homemade out of soemthing else. The reason i ask is that i already have a 10 gallon tank i used for a freshwater tank. I thought it might be fun to put it together myself. I just don;t want a rubber- made tube for a sump. No offense to those that do.
Nevessl I had heard that about the playground sand i just want to see what people on here thought of that. Did not want to have a problem with sand. Just want to do this right but also cost effieicent.

So do any of you guys have a link to setting up a refugim? I have read a couple of things like having macro algea in there and running the lights opposite of the display tank. But is that all that there is in there or sand and live rock?

the links that nevessl & i posted above ABOUND w/ info on this

best thing that running the lights in an opposite the display tank schedule does is keep you from having the ph swing that occurs when the "sun" goes down.....because techically (as far as water conditions are concerned) the "sun" never goes down

Yeah thanks for the web sites they are both great. Lot of readign to do there. I did not realize how much the one nevessl sent had on it. They will help a lot. Question i am not going to be starting out with a skimmer is that going to be a problem. I mean i should be able to add on e later right. Just the cost of getting this thing up and running is quite a bit. So it would probably be about Jan before i could get one unless i run into a good deal on here. And about this play sand. What would be the best way to go about washing it. Theh most effiecent and least mess. while at the same time getting it clean.

not starting out w/ a skimmer isn't so bad, but it will help w/ your water quality & make for less water changes etc, so it'd be one of the 1st things you want to invest in once setup expenses are taken care of....

just design your sump to hold one & add it once you can afford it. look into the asm g1 or g2 or the euro reef rs180. from the recomendations i have read, those are excellent skimmers.

the question i had was buying a skimmer that was too big for my tank & the best advice i got was that too small a skimmer would be worse than a skimmer too big.....you can always turn it off & if you upgrade tank sizes later on, that is one less piece of equipment you have to buy. i saw the g1 on marine depot for 259 & the g2 for 269 retail.....i figured for $10, i'd get the bigger & just turn it off occasionally

unless i run into a good deal on here.
prowl the Used Equipment & Dry Goods Selling forum for deals. i did searches in that forum for "asm skimmers" & found lots of g1 g2 going for $150-$200 & "euro reef rs180" & found several for the same price range....but you gotta be quick cause they normally get snatched up pretty quick LOL

i ended up finding a Bermuda Aquatics BPS-3C that retails for $300 + shipping & i got it for $185 shipped....so if you know what you are looking for, have the $$ to spend then & are QUICK (lol) there are good deals to be found in the selling forum. i actually found several asm g3 skimmers going for less than $200 (retails for $320)

And about this play sand. What would be the best way to go about washing it. Theh most effiecent and least mess. while at the same time getting it clean.
i have a hand-held strainer for like spaghetti & pasta. just take a cup or 2 at a time & rinse it thru the strainer with ro/di or even tapwater....i did that w/ the bag of live sand i got from the critter when i was setting up my new nano (but i used prepaired saltwater)

well I finally got the plumbing, ballast and light all hooked up for the new tank. Just waiting on the dry rock from macro rocks and getting sand and water in it. Filled it up tonight just to check for leaks and make sure everything worked out okay. I am so excited about this tank being set up. And so glad to be out of the nano.!!

I had great results from my first tank a 37 tall reef ...I didn't skim and I had an eheim for filtration. I was religious about my water changes every two weeks...this should bring success for you hopefully...no rush on the skimmer if you ask me.

Tank has been tested for leaks and it holds water good. I just bought the sand from wal-mart the other day and am going to get it washed and in the tank probably tomorrow. I am still waiting on the dry rock though from macro rocks. That has been a month almost since i placed the order. Would it do me any good to get it going with out the rock?

good luck on the marco rock....i read in a thread the other day about somebody that ordered some back in aug that has yet to get delivery

:nervous:

Yeah i read something about that too. I hope that it not going to happen to me. I have already sent one email to them with a very fast response back and he was assuring me that it would be here soon.
