Bulk DI Resin

No, I'm saying I can't see a difference to pick by, but either, both, or neither might be OK.

But in all likelihood they are both OK. Reef water is not an especially demanding application. :)

Randy I think I read someplace that the 60/40 ratio ensures that the product water is neutral, something to do with either the anon or caton ions being favored.

I wish i could remember where I read that.... May have been one of the "DIY recharge" sites or something to do with buying seperate canisters for ANON and CATON. Something about that not being an ideal setup with seperate resins of equal amounts.

I dunno it was a long time ago and we all know my chem skills are lacking.

If you find it, let me know. The overall net charge of the water must be zero, and I can't think how an imbalanced resin is desirable, but I'm certainly open to the possibility if it comes with a decent explanation. :)

Ah, now I think I understand. They are probably just talking about the volume ratios, not the actual exchange capacity. The exchange capacity probably matches on a molar basis, but it takes more volume to get that capacity of one type over the other. :)

This section from your link clued me in:

The resin itself is a uniform mixture of cation and anion resins in a specific volume ratio depending on their specific gravities. The ratio is normally 2 parts cation resin to 3 parts anion resin.

Thanks for the link Bean.

I went about it a different way. I called Resin Depot. They said the MB-1 is the one to get..:)

Why? cause it's what other Reefers are using.:D They buy it in such large amounts the can sell it a lower price.

Be careful DI resin has a shelf life.

Thanks, I had asked about that. They said as long as it is sealed tight in a plastic bag or container it should be OK. If exposed to high heat/humidty (which we have a ton of!) it will 'fracture the beads.
After I calculated it out, a cubic foot bag, probably (30-35) refills is a little more than I need and only save around $2 a lb. Probably not worth buying that much and having it sit.

The MB-1 is what I've been using for three+ years now.

I store it in an air conditioned space, in the bag that is in a sealed container and moist. It still works just fine and can't tell any negative effects from storage. I use a 20" filter with my DI that is plumbed to flow top to bottom.

I paid about $5/lbs including shipping which works out to about $5 to refill a 10" cartridge.

The key is you are storing it right not the case for many hobbyists. DI resin is agressive and if it is not sealed and left in the heat it will degrade.

My wife doesn't care for it in the house but since she's putting up with it the resin will remain indoors. :)
