Bulkhead Seal

I'm setting up my first tank with an overflow and the directions are contrary to the advice I received at the LFS.

The bulkhead seal consists of 3 parts:

1. Flange

2. Rubber washer

3. Nut

Where does the tank glass fit into the equation? And what is the best way to ensure the seal remains permanent?

Brian

The rubber washer goes on the flange side, not the nut side;) The direction you install it is up to you (or the instructions for the OF).

Pardon me for piggybacking, but my bulkheads have slip hosebarb fittings which aren't very tight. Should they be glued or siliconed?

I was having a little trouble picturing what you have... Sorry.

Are they slip fittings on the bulkhead and then you placed a slip hose barb fitting into the bulkhead? If so then yes, I would use PVC glue. If it is something other than that, let me know:D

Yes, the bulkheads came with slip hose barb fittings. Would I be better off glueing spa flex hose directly to the bulkheads? If so, what type of glue do use with spa flex/

Really it depends on your set up. You may want to use ridged PVC and a fitting before adding the spaflex in order to reduce the strain on the bulkhead from trying to bend the spaflex to where it needs to go. I believe the oatey's purple PVC glue works well for spaflax, although I have found that using pvc cleaner and then oatey's clear pvc glue has worked fine for all my connections.

Oh and a union never hurt in case you need to remove the section of spaflex for some reason down the road;)
