bulkhead suitable size

I plan to build 79" x 24" x 29" reef tank with two internal overflow and i want to install two Durso standpipes but I cannot decide the suitable size to the bulkhead ( drain & return) to my reef tank.

So, what do you think the suitable size of bulkhead ( drain & return) by using two overflow.

The size of your drains are dependent on your tank turnover. As your tank is about 238 gallons, I'd imagine you'd be looking to have a turnover, say, between 1500-2000 gph.

If this were the case, using the RC overflow calculator, you'd need a single drain pipe with a minimum diameter of 1.85". I'd imagine, if you wanted to use 2x 1.75" drainpipes you'd more-than be playing it safe.

Again, however, remember that it is dependent on your turnover, and use the calculator.

I dont think you will be running every bit of your tank flow threw the sump so size baised on what you want threw your sump plus a little extra capasity for snail blockage or pipe build up. IMO 2 1.5 inch drains would be good. I love overkill so i might go with 2 inchers but i am the king of overkill and that would be an insane amount of flow threw the sump. There is no need to excede the turnover of your skimmer. I want to skimm 100 percent of all water that comes from the tank before pumping it back in so thats my rule of thumb.

you only want 600-1000gph thru sump. 2-1.5" drains are good, do about 600gph each. 2-2" drains is fine too. 2-3/4 returns work well plumbing wise.

use a mag 9.5 or 1200 depend on plumbing/head.
