Bullock's Hypselodoris nudibranch question

Hi. I just got a nudibranch, and want to know how hard to care for this invert. Anyone success in take care of this. Please help. Thank.

Only eats sponges, no one knows what species of sponges, it will starve.

Unless you're a diver who can go collect a ton of different species of sponges and hope to find the right kind.. it's not going to last long.

If you are a diver, and live in the south pacific, you can go down and find out what sponge they are consuming. All nudibranchs eat one thing and one thing only. When that runs out, they die.

Any kind of sponge will work. I can buy at LFS

Nope, nope, nope!

Can't buy em.. the nudi eats only 1 species of sponge that can only be found in the wild. No one here knows the exact species and the only way to find out is to go catch some diving yourself and hope you discover it eating one. Basicly you just bought something that's going to starve if you can't go out there and collect it yourself. Sorry to say.. with nudibranches beauty gets the best of us hobbiest as the odds of actually finding their food source or even being able to are very slim. Whatever the lfs told you I'd never go back for whatever lie you heard to buy such a delicate creature. These are those type of animals that are best left in the wild unless you're an expert and have discovered their food source in the wild yourself.

I call the fish store that i bought they feed them sponges too

Lesson #1 of this hobby.. NEVER TRUST THE LFS!

Impossible. Sorry they're lying to you. Typical of lfs to rip off customers.. or at the very least just are not aware themselves. Reason why we're here!

http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/hypsbull If this is the correct species, then please read.. if not the only other species I can think of is red colored and is practically the same.

Don maybe able to provide more info on this perticular species as I'm only speaking in the sponge eating nudibranches ingeneral.

Im gonna ask my friend for a piece of sponges to see how it goes. Wish me luck

Goodluck!

Not trying to be mean, tbh like I said we don't know what type of sponge they eat.. if yours lives more than a month on their sponges maybe it'll be a new discovery. For all I know they might even be selling a different type of sponge. Let's just see how this goes. :strooper:

All nudibranchs are carnivorous feeding on sessile or sedentary organisms. Each suborder of nudibranch has a major food source. For dorids, which include Bullock's Hypselodoris nudibranch, most food comes from preying on bryozoans and sponges (Dysidea and Aplysilla) while aeolids and dendronotideans prey upon cnidarian species.

But more importantly, if your LFS sells sponges that they eat, then why ask the question here? And will the LFS warrant them for 30 days?

(pssst...Gymnodoris species eat other nudibranchs, including their own species...they may even try to eat themselves in a capture container....some of the aeolidioid nudi's may also eat other nudibranchs :) Your points are well taken, though. )

Yes, I know. I did not want to muddy the waters (pun intended, sorry).

LOL I considered that. OK everyone, as snorvich says...leave the brightly colored dorids alone, you won't be able to feed them unless you can collect the rocks (and sponges) that were hosting them.
