Bummed, Crashed, Let Down

I'm truly glad to see all positive threads from the swap, but I've just got to ask or pick some brains on what happened in my little aquatic world.

Brought my frags home which was nothing to fancy but at least 2 prize pieces I was excited for. I dipped in the tropic marine and then placed the corals in the tank. Within two hours the skin dropped from most of the corals. I might have a milli that may make it, but everything is a loss. I tested my levels asap and found the only one off was the alk, instead of the usual 2.9 I had 2.5. All the other corals in the tank are fine and doing well. Just can't put my finger on what could have happened.

At this time I can only think maybe the tropic marine concentration was higher than I had measured. I've never had this problem before and in all honesty can't believe it's still happened.

Anyone have some ideas to throw my way that way I can get some peace of mind on why I lost all the money I just spent?

I used the Tropic Marin also... I let sit 15 minutes in solution mixed with tank water, took frags out and placed in tank water in separate container. Let sit 15 minutes then dipped again for 15 minutes in Tropic Marin solution. Rinsed in fresh container of existing tank water and placed in frag tank. No issues so far.

one bad thing about frag swaps is that some people (sellers) stress there frags out so bad from inexperience that the frags usually die from no fault of yours. some will pack the frags the night before and they get very cold /very hot or a number of different things it is always a crap shoot buying from non retail vendors and first time swappers. know your vendor or there reputation is the best bet to get healthy frags. otherwise your are taking a crapshot.

I had this same discussion with a friend last night over some frags that he lost as well. I agree with what Crusty said above. You never know what journey the corals have been put through unless you know the seller well. I once was in a position to sell a lot of nice frags and colonies to people. I can recall waking up at 4 A.M. to start packing corals for the days swap. I even labled everyones container the night before so the packing would go much quicker. You never know what trials and tribulations the seller may of had to go through to get there. It is always a gamble to buy frags from a temporary public gathering rather than from someones home system.

Sorry to hear about your losses Ron.

Did you bring your frags home in a styro? or some other way to keep them warm? I've seen peeling in sps corals with a 5 degree temp swing. But I've also seen them live through worse swings too.

I would guess the dip as well. Sorry to hear bout that man, sucks! I use Two Little Fishes Revive and have never had any issues.

I did acclimate the animals before dipping. One thing that I've heard and did notice is that a few of the acros were starting to grow to the plug where others had not. I did transport in a cooler that I feel did the job.

Oh, well thanks for your thoughts everyone. Just bummed to watch 150 bucks disappear in a couple of hours!

Thanks for the offer Erick, but I didn't get any frags from you. The way I'm feeling right now I'm just going to keep monitoring my tank before adding anymore frags for a while. Or build up my confidence to where I want to through some money back in the tank.

That's the woes of reef keeping my friend and yet we all continue to do it again, again and again.

I have 200 dollars in snail shells if that makes ya feel better.

Hang in there!

LOL... ask Erik the story of the discount fish that cost him a brand new MH bulb!

Splashing saltwater on hot glass is a bad thing.

Sorry to hear about your stuff Ron. I had a 20L set up a few years back and added my $300 in frags to hold temporarily and lost power for 8 hrs ... everything died but some yellow polyps :(
Now I can't kill those polyps when I want to.

I don't know Kevin, I had the same problem with yellow polyps a few years ago or at least when Joes Juice came out and it did a pretty good job with them. What can I say I really was sick of them and I was feeling evil.

Hey Ron sorry to hear about the corals!!!!!! Come over and pick some out of my system and bring some cheer back!!!!!!!! I think we bought that same one anyways I can frag some of that for you as well. Ben

Thanks Ben I will take you up on that, but I'm going to wait little bit just to make sure that my system is staying the course. Just trying to check to see if there are any spikes or drops that I may have missed or if it was just the coral dip. It just gets me cause I pretty sure I used this dip last year and 2 months ago when I picked up a few frags from Joe22863.

Thanks, it's not like this is the first big loss but still a disappointment. Thanks for helping me out in the near future.l

Sorry to hear it man. It's never fun to flush money. I remember the demise of my old tank, I cringe at how much $ I lost. We all must be wired wrong to stay in this hobby!

I'd have to agree with you on being wired wrong, but it's a good thing we don't rationalize how we spend money or doing the right thing. In all honesty I still haven't even told my wife yet of the passing of the corals to the great big ocean in the sky.

Hey Ron, I can bring a piece of green slimer that Phil gave me to the meeting if you need another sps to try in your tank. A good 2" broke off the piece so I can bring that to you if you are going.
