Burned!

Maybe I am the only one stupid enough not to know this, but I thought I would put out the word in case I am not. I had a halogen bulb crack and partially break off a couple of days ago. The light was still working so I didn't think much of it except I would now have to replace an almost new bulb. Well, my big leather , bubble, and frogspawn got badly burned. The worst part is so did my cross hatch trigger, magnificent fox face, and flame angel. It didn't really show up until the next day, just like a sunburn I guess. Needless to say, the bulb is now off and I guess I can only pray everyone will recover. I am devastated. Any suggestions?

UV shield?
That's what I was thinking.
Hope everything pulls thru.

I have taken he bulb out so there is no more radiation and added Melafix and Primafix to help prevent infection of the burns although now the star polyps and buttons have all closed up. What a disaster.

never put meds in your reef man. no matter how reef safe they say. normally if it's reef safe meds they don't really work. coralvue bulbs did this before brand new and not broken it will pass in a few days to weeks. I would skim like crazy do as big a water change as you can and double up on your carbon. the corals will probably die from uv radiation poisoning but corals in another part of the tank may die from meds poisoning.

I've used mela and pima with good effects. Your leathers will droop for a day, star polyps will retract for a day or two. Have to turn off your skimmer to use, but not bad products.

after the conference call to passionFish from the reef club meeting, we gave her lots of advice, hope some of it was good!

keep us posted

Man i hate it when my star polyps retract and my leather droops :eek2:

We recommended not using the meds, adding more iodine, adding vitamins formula and broccoli to diet, feeding plants from algae refugium directly to fish (good idea anyway), letting colloids from algae refugium help repair tissue damage…

Maybe provide shady area to prevent more exposure?

Added melafix, then did water change, and have now put a piece of plastic under light to keep water off. Flame angel, who was burned the worst, died. Had her for 5 years, miss her. All other fish and corals have recovered. Thanks for asking.

Sorry about your Flame but glad everything else is ok though. Thanks for posting, this kind of info helps us newbies out.

I'm really sorry for your Flame angel and I hope your other pets make it. As LauraCline said, this is a good lesson for us newbies. I created a DIY canopy and have not added the protection between the water and the bulbs - This is now first on my list today to get finished. Again sorry for your lost.
