Burnt tips

So I have noticed that I was having some burnt tips and some STN on a few Acros and all my other acros seem to be happy and healthy. Yesterday, while viewing my tank, I noticed a semi-rusted razor blade on my sandbed. I pulled it out and I remember losing that razor about two weeks ago, right around the time I noticed the start of the STN. Can a razorblade do this? The razor is only semi-rusted.

I would be skeptical of the razor blade being the cause. Possible? Sure, but I'd be a lot more inclined to think that if we were talking about a penny, or something else made of copper. I'm sure some other folks will chime in here but I think the razor blade isn't the cause of your problems. I hope I'm wrong.

Not sure what rust is made of, funny thing is 90% of my SPS look great, its only the new green ORA coral, Pearlberry and Ora cali tort that have burnt tips / stn. My monti-cap is a little lighter in general also. It possibly could have to do with adding MG without testing first. I was always under the impression that burnt tips are from alk swings, but my alk was stable at 8.0DKH.

What kit are you reading kh with, I ask because I trusted my salifert kit and was keeping alk at 7.5 and had burnt tips and thought it was many different things and tried to correct with no results. Then when checked with other kits I found it to be between5.5 and 6.5. When I brought the alk up my problems went away. Maybe try going up to 9dkh.

Elos for all my tests. I will do a full set of tests tonight and report back on monday morning. I will try raising it up a little. So burnt tips = low alk? or high? or swings?

Probably should take a water sample to your lfs and ask them to test it to confirm what you're seeing with your test kits. Even the best kits can go bad.

Many test kits are hit & miss for accuracy. I recommend buying a bottle of "multi-reference" solution (mine is Fauna Marine) which gives guaranteed values on the label you can test your kits with and then adjust their numbers up or down. For example my ELOS KH kit is out by -1 DKH so when I test with it I just add +1 DKH so when I test my water & the test kit says 7 DKH I know it's actually 8 DKH, etc. I also write what I need to adjust by on the box of each test kit so I always have the info handy.
