There is a difference between high growth rate tips and "burnt" tips. The high growth rate tips lack pigmentation in the cell structure and a high concentration of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), where in the darker tips total protein (TP), total organic carbon (TOC) and measured lipids are in high concentration.
(Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleoside triphosphate used in cells as a coenzyme, often called the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy...might be a real good reason for it to appear in a high growth area.)
"Burnt" tips on the other hand are tips where tissue loss has occurred, and can have an array of causes. These include shipping damage, predation by tank occupants, tank parameter issues (more specifically usually alkalinity) among others. Once the issue is resolved (and if algae hasn't overgrown the affected area), the coral can overgrow the damaged area once again.
