is there a huge difference between the burrfish and a porcupine puffer?i have seen both listed places and just wondered if burrfish stay smaller or grow larger, and specifics..thanks

Burrfish as in Cyclichthys schoepfi or Chilomycterus antillarum? The burrfish will only grow about 10" max, smaller in captivity, the porky will approach/exceed 18" in the wild, probably close/over a foot in captivity. Behavior/personality should be very similar.

Chilomycterus antillarum, my bad i should have said his scientific name, i really like puffers but im only in highschool and i only have a 55, so i was just wondering what their requirements were. i want something with a lottt of personality and something that catches anyones attention that looks at the tank, any other ideas besides puffers?

I wouldn't go smaller than a 90g with any of the Chilomycterus sp. They can get to 10-12" without tail. Just doesn't seem right in a 55.

Agreed on a 55 being too small for a burrfish. They are just as active and personable as a porcupine. I past up on one at the LFS and really regret it, he was awesome to watch. A sharpnose puffer is a much better suggestion.

ya i figured he was too small, any fish that are just as personable or close to being as personable as a dogface or porc puffer?

I had a very personable valentini. I also had a bluepot sharpnose and he was beautiful but lacking in personality.

Isn't there a small "real" (i.e. non-sharpnose) puffer sold as brackish that adapts to full salt and is naturally found in full salt as an adult? I'm thinking it is the green spotted or the figure eight? Would one of them, carefully acclimated to salt, do okay?

EDIT: pretty sure it is the greenspotted. not sure if you can keep it with other fish or not... Below is a wetwebmedia article:

Green spotted can be 6 inches pretty agressive but need high end brackish-full marine when mature. Figure 8s are found FW in wild but do best in low end brackish. I think the GSP would actually be a really good idea, so long as theres no inverts.

I think the sharpnoses are excellent for smaller tanks, and have great personalities. But to the small tank sw hobbyist who considers a "real" puffer to look more like a dogface or a porc, I'm also thinking a larger GSP in a sw tank might be worth a look. I was just observing some larger ones at my LFS in the brackish section. Healthy, eating, pugnacious and full of personality, and just $6.99 each...
