Just ran into this thread and if i may, heres some advice i got once from someone I admire as a photographer,
JGoslee you will find that there are many cameras out there and just as many lenses to fit.If you are a first time buyer ,by all means check and recheck those reviews both professional and amateur.one thing you will find is that everyones experience with certain cameras is different,so you want to know about the small problems or kudos that different users have, that i find is the best way to see if the camera is what you are looking for.
However the best way, and i do this myself, is to look up a local rental place and see what it will cost you to rent both cameras on different days or a weekend preferably, then go use them in every possible way that you can think of to shoot. once you are done base your purchase on the camera that was most user friendly to you.
my two cents, being a Nikon person for years,i love my D80 and use it more than my D200,but i must say that the D80 is a recent purchase and so it's the new toy in the arsenal. I also have a 60mm macro and i don't use it as much but it is a great lens.by the way try to find a rental place that will applie your rental fee towards your purchase, that is the best deal you can get.Good luck.
