Hey everyone, I am thinking on buying glass sheets and having someone who is good with glass come over a construct the tank in place.

Where do some of you buy your glass sheets? I am thinking on having a tank over a 1,000 gallons like Mike Paletta. Any places that you know of that sell sheets of glass that are at least 8' long and 1.5" wide and that have Starfire glass. (I am NOT going acrylic, too expensive for my blood!)

Exactly how much more expensive is a starphire glass? I had been quoted $1250 for a 96"x30"x30" in regular 3/4"glass mounted in my home (im thinking about going 96"x36"x30). I just found out about this type of glass, any other advantage than the clarity??? Should I temper the glass, the guy that is going to construct the aquarium told me it wasnt necessary but I want ur opinion.
Thanks
Gustavo

It raises the price quite abit! I have 2 96" X 30" panes of Starphire on my 300g. It was a big jump in price but worth every $$$! No tempered I would not do! No clarity is the only advantage using it. But it is well worth it trust me.

I know that price here is a touchy subject for what i have seen in the boards but since that is exactly what ill be using (2 96" x 30" panes) how much exactly it increased the price???

Thanks

You will be looking at around another $ 800.00-$1000.00 on top of the quote you got of $1250.00

Thats for the 2 panes right?? So is 400-500 per pane??

Thanks

So, that's nearly 75% more, or, almost double... I'll say, from my experience, that if that's the price for just the glass, it seems a little high. BUT... then again, I know it's something in limited supply. My tank is basically a tall 180.. so it's 24x30x72.. my 2 biggest panes are the front and back @ 72x30 inches (only the front is starphire, back is standard).
My tank manufacturer told me 'starphire' is only available in 1/2 inch thicknesses, and if thicker, you have to get 1" laminated glass (2 1/2 inch panes). I've also heard recently there is a source for 3/4" "Starphire" (also heard the 3/4 is "Diamante", or some other 3rd party version of "Starphire").

**** For the record, since nobody else has stated it and lots of folks get confused by this******

"Starphire", is PP&G's trade name for "Low Iron" glass... there are more than one kind of 'low iron' glass that PP&G makes, each have different clarities and other properties, as well as the same type of glass made by other glass manufacturers. However, as in most of these kinds of discussions, "Starphire" is used pretty interchangeably for all manner of "low-iron" glass, which may not be correct - some flavors of "low-iron" glass look different than others!

OK, that being said... I paid $1k USD to have Canadian "Starphire" on 3 panes, the front and 2-sides, so I only had 1 "large" pane of glass that had to be starphire (and the bracing, too... FWIW). However the whole tank, cost me about what you're being up-charged for 2 panes of starphire over float glass.....

.. while that may be a reflection of the supply/demand (especially in the aquarium trade), may be exchange rate (USD was higher 3 years ago), or, your manufacturer may be using a different glass than mine. Perhaps my tank is no-name brand chinese made low-iron glass, and your's is coming off the line in Pittsburgh next week? I don't know. I do however, think that's high. I had to replace one of the braces on my tank (don't ask)... Got a 4"x72" piece of half-inch "low-Iron" glass from a local shop, about 35-bucks... all edges ground and polished (took 3 weeks to get the glass in, but I got it).

If you're being upcharged $1k over the standard glass price, I'd ask around, and see about other quote's for the glass..... that seems high to me.

Regardless of the pricing, I'd still go w/ starphire. :D

Ok, that price is not only for the glass, is for the tank constructed in my home so it includes labor too and transportation of the glass. I forgot to mention that live in Puerto Rico and shipping is very expensive. The guy that will be constructing the aquarium has done almost every custom aquarium for hotels here in Puerto Rico.
Thanks u have been very helpful

LOL! Oh, christ, PR man... Hehehe, take that price and run with it dude!
The shipping on the glass has got to be the bulk of that price, for certain.

Who did you get to make your glass for you?

Philip

The glass was manufactured by PP&G best I can tell... The Aquarium was assembled by InterAmerican. Shipping was $300 on top of the tank.

I built a tank just recently with one pane from tempered 1/2 starfire. Unfortunately it was not wrapped from the factory (ask for that!) and sometime on its way to my house it got scratched right in the middle. I've ended up using it on the backside of my tank.

I have to admit that while I was building the tank this really bothered me as I ould really see the difference in clarity between the one startfire pane and the others.

However now that I have all my tank lights on I can still see the difference but its not so much that I care.
