my fish are on their 5th week of hypo in QT for ich. im setting up my 120 this weekend and i was planning on buying LR. well i just gt tot hinking that im just going to be bringing ich back into my tank after i just spent 5 weeks getting rid of it.

should i just go with all base rock?

keep your fish in qt and get any live rock you want, Where are you planning on getting the live rock? why would it have ich?

I any case after you get the rock leave your display with the LR in it and no fish the ich would die without a host.

i was thinking liveaquaria, 45lb fiji for $80.

im not saying it WILL have ich, but im afraid it might. and to let it die off will take another 6 weeks.

so putting the rock in a QT tank or using base rock are my only options?

ich needs a fish to complete it's life cycle. As long as you have rock that is fishless for 6 weeks you're safe. Even if it had eggs, they would hatch and be unable to find a host and die off before they matured enough to lay new eggs.

But I will say that next time I set up a tank, I'd go 80% base rock and QT the 20% of LR for several weeks. I've had too many issues with aptasia and bubble algae. It may not look as good for the first few months until it starts to color up, but I think it's best long run.

if you are buying rock and you don't want LR...take a look at Marcorocks.com Mattyice and I are both very pleased with our purchases from Marc...I bought 107lbs from him for my 120 and ended up putting the last 13lb rock into a 20g QT tank...and it takes up the whole tank!

this is a picture just after I put the 94lbs of dry rock into the tank to cycle...wet weight is pushing 200lbs I would think...

ill get to the doors sometime, i need the bit for making raised panel doors. and some $$ for the maple.

i will prolly just got base rock, i have my 40lb of rock in my 55 which should mostly be LR by now. coraline is going nutz in my tank.

i dont wanna go another 6 weeks, my PBT is getting clostrapobic in the 20g lol

Those are nice rocks! Lots of spots for frag mounts to build it up yourself. Bottom ones in particular.

wow that stuff is expensive..... unless its wieght it 3x when wet lol
live rock is cheaper lol

how much is the equivelant to 100lb of live rock?

Well it does get to about 2x when wet, plus you can ship it ground so shipping is cheaper. Also, the liveaquaria rock needs to be cured again, so expect a few weeks of some really smelly rock. Also the $90 is for the 'standard' rock...it's very solid.

true it wasn't "Live" rock...but my total price shipped was $420 for the rock...so it came out to $3.92 a pound shipped as dry rock...or less than $2 a pound once wet...so I didn't think it was that bad...I was looking at spending close to $1000 if I was going to buy all premium live rock...

I changed my mind on buying LR when I found out that FDfiremedic's rock was pretty much all dry rock to start...and his rock looks awesome...full of coraline and stuff...just takes time to get that way I guess...

mine looks like caca right now as I just went into the brown diatom stage after initial cycle was over...CUC went in yesterday and is already making progress...

Did you do any prep work on the rock before you put it in the tank? I'm seriously thinking of going with the dry rock. My only concern is the smell since winter is here and the house will be closed up, so all the stink will be trapped inside.

how much of the base rock you guys reccomend?

**i dont want the tank full of rock, about halfway
i want my tang to have some room
