buying marine beta

Hi, just decided that I'm getting a marine beta this weekend. It has been at the store for 6 months(hefty price) but I can take it for $90.00 plus tax.

This is going in a 75 gallon with a mimic tang(aggressive to newcomers),bi color blenny, 2 percs, 2 cardinals and 2 yellow tailed blues.

Any hints on introduction besides turning off lights and doing a little rearranging? Will not be slow dripping and will have him/her in within 30-40 mins.

As you can tell I will not be quarantining this fish. Thanks
 
I've one for probably 2+ years and find it very hardy. It's eating everything from frozen to pellets but growth is very slow though and stays in the rocks most of the time.

As long as you've plenty of rocks the intro should be fine and keeping the lights off for a day will definitely help for the new fish to acclimate. Keep a close eye for the first week and I think you will be fine.

Hi, I had a marine betta in my past 180, they are nice fish and bother no one. They are very shy and will stay in rocks out of sight almost all the time. Mine ate frozen foods with no problem.
 
Just put it in the tank after 4.5 hours of acclimation!!!! Brutal sg at store-1.016 and mine is at 1.026. Well I had no choice but to give this a slow acclimation. The ride home was 20 min. so I wasn't overly concerned on ammonia buildup. All lights out and he seems to be doing well. I was on 2 minds of purchasing but I know they are really hardy. It eats flake and pellet and some frozen so hope all goes well. He ate before I left store and I checked their sg with my refractometer at the store. I could not believe the reading.

well good luck. i have had one for 8 months now. finally when im out of its sight i can see him paruzing the tank. before he would stay behind the rocks. he would even stay back their when its feeding time. he would wait till the food floated to him.
 
Yeah I have concerns of not seeing him much but people do report of them out and about. I really don't want to remove all the rock from the tank. :lol:
 
It's supposed to be one of the hardiest fish out there, pretty disease resistant. It's just that you might not see it much if you have alot of hiding places. It also will eat your shrimps if you have some.
 
I have 2 in a tank, one 15-16 years old, and the other about 8. Rarely ever see either of them, except at feeding time to grab a quick bite, and then back into the rocks. Occasionally at night they will come out and swim around, but are pretty secretive, otherwise. Very hardy, and underrated fish, IMO.
 
Mimic tang is being aggressive and the beta has his tail a little frayed. I'm iknda worried and was thinking of putting eggcrate in there as partition? What do you think?. or will it calm down?

If you can put eggcrate in that would be great but if not try keeping the tank dark as much as you can for another day or two for the betta to recover. The tang should ease up after a few days. Keep a close eye out just as you would with any new additions.
 
I've had my Betta for almost 3 years now. It is fairly social, spending a good portion of the day out in the open (still much more reclusive than my other fish).

Jd474 - how large is the 15+ year old? And what size tanks do you keep them in? (I know you work with some large tanks)

Mine is a very slow grower, despite eating everything I offer 4-6 times a day.

He is 5-6", and is in a 13,000. He lived in the same spot in the tank for a decade, but when the new one was introduced, moved, and now they are almost always next to each other. Don't know if they are male/female, but was nice to see them make friends. I am hoping they will spawn at some point.
 
Partitioned with eggcrate 5 days now and the tail of the beta has come back beautifully and surprisingly quick. My feeling however is I will have to remove the mimic for a week or so and then reintroduce. Just by observation I don't trust just removing the eggcrate.

Really didn't think placing the beta would cause this scene at all. Ofcourse I did realize that any fish after the tang would be bullied somewhat.

Also the beta is simple awesome- quite visible and eating pellet and frozen. It definitely has eyecatcher status.
 
Hope everything works out for your fish! I have had one for ~3 months now and he is probably my favorite fish in the tank (was at the lfs for ~1 year before we got him). I see him alot more than I expected but feeding him can be a bit frustrating.
 
Thanks and I agree they are super nice. Mine was at the store for months-nearly a year so I knew he/she was good to go. So far so good with the feeding. Good luck
 
Removed the eggcrate but the tang is still aggressive. I put the mimic in a 35 gallon within an hour of removing the barrier. Hoping this will do the trick, and will reinttoduce the tang in about a week. If this does not work I guess the tang has to go. Hate to have to get rid of it. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks
