buying used tanks

If a tank's glass is chipped on the side edge will it effect the integrity of the glass?

I don't think so. I guess it depends on the severity of the chip. When i bought my 120 brand new, i chipped it on the egde a little transporting it home. It has been up and running for 2 years now. I would be very careful about buying used tanks tho. I bought a bargain used 150 gallon tank off ebay, and within 48 hours of it being full of water, the bottom cracked and it dumped 150 gallons of water on the floor of an apartment i had been living in for 2 weeks.

A lot depends on the stand the tank was on before you get it. If it has been poorly supported and stressed over a number of years, chances are that the transporting will finish it off. A tank on a poorly built stand will rarely last over ten years. I have heard of tanks that have been running 30+ years though. As for the chip issue, it would depend on where the chip is, and the shape of the chip. If it's a rounded small chip, it's probably ok. If the chip has a sharp point or rough edge to it, i would pass.

That's my Grandson Dalton ;). He just learned he could stick his tongue out the day of the picture lol.

if i already had the tank and chipped it myself i would probably try to use it, but if i know a tank has a chip i would definitely pass on it, i would always be thinking about it in the back of my mind, this hobby can be stressful enough why add to it.
