I know I promised a few here that I would post some pics from diving/snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands last week. Not too many great shots, but I can share a few ;)

That's a golden/regular neon goby cross!! Those are pretty cool. I've actually seen one in the store and I know someone is breeding them somewhere.

Cool!

Great pics Matt!!!! I'm surprised you didn't bring home an urchin for your Bangaiis!!!! :D

Is that cowrie the poisonous one??? I get confused... :( Which is the one that will stab and kill you???

Oh, and pretty Damsel and anenome shrimp!!! :)

I had one of those flamingo tongue cowries once a looooong time ago. They eat gorgonia, and you can see where it ate in Matt's pictures. A clear trail of dead tissue clean across the colony.

Where did you dive in BVI? I am going in 2 weeks and would love to know which spots you enjoyed the most.

Thanks guys. Those flamingo tongues are beautiful, but they probably aren't good aquarium inhabitants unless your seafans are growing out of control. I don't think they are poisonous (at least not from handling them).

Neowind, we visited a couple of locations on Tortola and Virgin Gorda (you have to see the Baths; so-so marinelife, but the swim-throughs, tunnels, etc are great), The Indians--a good snorkeling site with nice coral since it is too deep for the tourists to walk on it :( as a plus for those so inclined, you can climb to the top and jump into the ocean :D , Norman Island (fairly good snorkeling along the shores of the Bight), Peter Island, Sandy Spit (very good diving on the ocean side as there is a reef wall covered with marinelife that goes straight down from the surface to about 50'), Jost Van Dyke--actually White Bay on the side facing Tortola was very good snorkeling with lots of fish, hard and soft corals, etc (didn't have my camera there though).

Some of the bays/harbors have good snorkeling, but I should mention that the sewage laws as they apply to boats are not enforced in the BVI, and most of the boats (including our catamarans) have no holding tanks and are plumbed directly into the sea, so it would be a good idea to take a look at the currents and snorkel appropriately. I couldn't believe it, but the local captains said it is the norm there...BVI doesn't permit jet-skis, but you can dump the ship's bilge on a reef

Oh my lord. That is horrific...well for the reefs yes...but I just have this image of Matt out there snorkeling and poop floating by. hah hah.

Aye I agree about the Baths on Virgin Gorda, I was that last spring and it was awesome.

I prefer the US VI, Sapphire beach on St. Thomas has some decent snorkeling for being on a resort beach. I see lots of turtles there and found a gorgeous kinds helmet (empty in a octopus hole).

On St. John I love going over to some of the bays you have to hike to to snorkel because a lot of the tourrists always hang around the big named places and they aren't that nice.

Leinster bay (I believe that is the one) is my favorite. I was swimming along looking for turtles and a grey reef shark was following me (this was the day I forgot my fins) and he swam under me in 3 feet of water, was pretty impressive.

Quite a few sharks in that part of the world. We saw blacktips, lemons, and nurse sharks, but I managed only a couple of really blurry pictures...closest thing was this guy we spotted feeding above a grass flat, so I jumped in with the camera...sorry Donny, he wouldn't fit in my suitcase:

We may be going to the VI's in Sept... I can't wait now. All pics I've seen out of the VI's have been really nice. Did you see any nice zoanthid colonies?

Lots of nice ones Gary, although the pics of them aren't too good. Lime greens, blues, pinks, and some of the colonies were many feet across. There were some nice ones in the intertidal too, so they must really like that bright light!
