C. bispinosa hybrid?

Are there any hybrids that occur with C. bispinosa in nature? I'm thinking about pairing my coral beauty with another centropyge but I'm not sure which.

To the best of my (limited) knowledge there haven't been any thus far, but I don't own the Angelfishes of the World book so I am not completely sure. I do know that aberrations are relatively "common" though.

There have been flame coral beauty hybrids.

Ah, I think I remember seeing that one in my angelfishes of the world book (I'm not at home so I can't check it) I think I also remember seeing a C. bispinosa x C. shepardii. So what are the chances of me being able to pair a small C. loricula with my current C. bispinosa?

I doubt you will get a flame and coral beauty to "pair" because many people keep these fish together and yet we don't hear much if at all of anyone saying they have spawned. I think it would be cool to try though and think you should try! If you try I would get the largest healthy fish you could find of one species and the smallest of the other and see if you could pair them up.

Actually I always assumed that centropyge hybrids were purely accidents, i.e. a bunch of flame angels are spawning together and a bunch of coral beauties are spawning together and somehow one ends up spawning with the other. I don't think they will spawn regularly together in a home aquarium the way a real pair of a single species would.

Yeah, my C. bispinosa I assume is male because it has been by itself for a while now and it it quite large. I will look for a small C. loricula.

Good point, I never thought of it as happening like that. But what the hell, I'll try it anyway. :hammer:

C. bispinosa ranges from South Africa all the way to the Central Pacific, and hybridizes with many species along the way. I received one of about a dozen captive raised lemonpeels from Frank Baensch years ago... in the box was a coral beauty that Frank had paired with the lemonpeel and they were spawning... :)

What you assume in the first part of your post is a going theory for some hybridization, and has been proven by many clownfish breeders like ORA. ORA and other institutions have had instances where "accidental" hybrids have resulted of species that were not paired, but shared a common sump or water system. The sperm of one species fertilized the eggs of another... However, what you state is not possible in the second part of your post has been proven many times also, including in my own basement with a Centropyge resplendens/ C. fisheri pair that produced fertile offspring for Frank Baensch of RCT Hawaii. I also received the one captive raised Centropyge joculator he raised... it came paired with a Centropyge interrupta... when I placed this pair in with my wild Centropyge joculator the joc stopped spawning with the interrupta and moved onto the jocs, leading one to believe that this spawning usually only occurs when the one species cannot find a mate of the same species... In the wild mixed species spawning has been observed many time in angelfish, including Centropyge. Centropyge bispinosa has been observed spawning with Centropyge shepardi in Guam... In my ~six trips and months of diving in Guam I saw ONE coral beauty (and I chased it excitedly :D)... Centropyge shepardi are a common angelfish there...

What you propose to do is cool! Find out what happens! With my Centropyge loriculus/C. ferrugata hybrid documented here... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1702055, I just recently got a true Phillipino flame angel (rare) to mix it with along with a Phillipino rusty angel (common)... what will happen when the trio grows out and who will spawn with who? Who knows... but whatever happens it will be cool... :)

Copps

Very cool copps. So given the right conditions it is possible that C. bispinosa and C. loricula could pair and spawn in captivity?

I'm sure it's possible... flames and coral beauties are very closely related... both in the "bispinosa complex" of Centropyge, and I have seen coral beauties spawn with species outside of that complex... just be aware that the situation you're under is the toughest, with an existing large male. If you are going to attempt this it would be ideal to remove the coral beauty for a few weeks while the small flame gets adapted before introducing the coral beauty again...

Yeah I think I'll move the coral beauty into my qt while the flame gets comfortable. I think I'm going to order a small (1.5 inch) C. loricula tomorrow from BZ.
