C Dogs 400g Sun Lit Peninsula Reef

I'm still in the process. I had a very old electric buffer that I wore out quickly and just bought a new one. I haven't finished since then. There wasn't that many scratches to begin with & they were very fine (you barely or couldn't feel with fingernails). The tank looked almost brand new. I just used Novus heavy & light scratch remover with a electric car buffer. The hardest part is bending over or kneeling inside the tank for long periods of time.

If the scratches are too deep to buff you will have to sand it down with a bunch of different grit sandpaper and then buff after. That is a lot more work.

Oh the one I'm looking at is brand new. A friend has offered to give it a whirl an make one, I'm thinking 48/48/24!
I can't find any sweet craigslist deals!

Over the weekend I added (2) 10 gallon tanks to breed my Picasso clown fish. They have been laying eggs over the last few years and wanted to raise the lil ones. I took wire shelving down in the laundry room and added a double track shelf system. It cost me about $50-60 for everything from Lowes & holds 400 pounds per pair of tracks. Depending on how the clown fish breeding goes I can add a third tank with the sink still there or a fourth is I relocate the utility sink.

Here are some pics after I removed the wire shelving and installed the double track.

Sweet looking set up!
Keep me in mind if they breed and you're able to raise the frye. I'd love a pair of the Picasso clownfish

Wow C Dog, I applaud your go-get'm approach. Building your first large system and breeding clowns all at the same time. Makes me feel sheepish.

I have a few of comments for you to consider:

- You do not need 1" thick acrylic to build your overflow. Totally overkill and unnecessary. 3/8" thick sheet is more than adequate and will be easy to work with (cut, router, glue).

- A bean animal/herbie style external overflow is a great idea.

- your MRC skimmer seems to be missing the injectors in the picture. You may know this. I recommend you order replacements from MRC if you really want the skimmer to work well. A lot of experimentation is required for these designs to skim well so I wouldnt suggest building them on your own unless you plan to spend a lot of time tweaking it.

- you might consider asking design questions (such as overflow) in one-by-one threads in the DIY forum. People are very helpful and you'll get excellent guidance and a lot of responses.

good luck

I forgot to mention, I previously used an actuated ball valve in the manner you are planning. I used a cheap powerstrip type wave timer to actuate the valve on a planned interval. It worked flawlessly for years.

edit - I just remembered, the timer was called a Natural Wave Timer. I believe outlets #5 and #6 are wired opposite so it will deliver power alternately to actuate the valve.

I have a lot of time. Great work hours and im taking the tank build slow to make sure everything is how I want it.

Thanks 1" is freaking expensive!!

I emailed MRC and they sent me to one of there online sellers for parts. They told me I could only buy the whole injector set up (even though I had some of the pieces). They wanted $360+ for it. I told them heck NO ill make my own. Thats almost half the price of the skimmer brand new. Thats a major rip off.

Will do. After resarching on breeding clown fish it seems straight forward and hopefully I will be successful.

Here are some iphone vids of the ones I have. I have had them for 4-5 years.
You cant tell in the vids but they have some metallic teal around the white stripe & side fin area. Its not much but maybe the offspring will have more when I breed them.

The tank looks huge on that trailer! How did the transport go, i had to haul mine in the back of a pickup truck around two and a half hours and it poured rain over an hour of the trip! Great find, i paid around the same for mine. Cant wait to see more, keep it coming!
im tagging along

I towed it with my Excursion diesel and all went well. I drove 2.5 hours each way to get the tank. I bought the trailer from Lowes just for the tank. I still have to remodel, make a stand, DIY rock. So still alot of work to be done but will post pics/updates as I do stuff.

Keep it coming :) excited to see what kinda aquascape you construct with those dimensions, any ideas on you plans?

I have been looking to buy live/dry rock locally for cheap. I will probably will end up doing DIY rock.

Not sure where he is but check out reef rocks, they might be local to you. I just ordered 50lbs from him.
Oh yeah, any baby clownfish yet???? :D

A friend of mine got the pukani dry rock from bulk reef supply. It's very cheap and no crazy shipping costs, it's kinda high in phosphates so he let it cook in a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tub for a month with a skimmer running and did 50% water changes once a week. I can't remember what he was dosing but there is a thread on here that explains the process well. Hope whatever you choose works te best.

Joe

Update: I haven't done much with this build lately. We had our 2nd kid in march and have been busy with the new baby. I also have been doing a big landscaping project at my house. I just need to build the stand and close in my patio. Once that is done I will post a lot more.
