Maybe they are getting caught actually collecting. I know of no laws concerning imported marine life. You are not allowed to hold local species.

My Advice,... Get Out Of California!!

My Advice,... Get Out Of California!!

TJG, Here's the skinny:
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. Chapter 3.5 (commencing with Section 2300) is added to
Division 3 of the Fish and Game Code, to read:

CHAPTER 3.5. CAULERPA ALGAE

2300. (a) No person shall sell, possess, import, transport,
transfer, release alive in the state, or give away without
consideration the salt water algae of the genus
Caulerpa species: taxifolia, cupressoides, mexicana,
sertulariodes, floridana, ashmeadii, racemosa, verticillata, and
scapelliformis .
(b) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), a person may possess, for
bona fide scientific research, as determined by the department, upon
authorization by the department, the salt water algae of the Caulerpa
species: taxifolia, cupressoides, mexicana, sertulariodes,
floridana, ashmeadii, racemosa, verticillata, and scapelliformis.
(c) In addition to any other penalty provided by law, any person
who violates this section is subject to a civil penalty of not less
than five hundred dollars ($500) and not more than ten thousand
dollars ($10,000) for each violation.
As it so happens, I sell Caulerpa prolifera, which is not on this list! California really is a crazy place to be!

Wow!
Thats the first I've EVER seen this information! I guess its like the Hyacinth for ponds. There is a ton of caulerpa out there. Fish and game stands to cash in big on all of us unknowing reefers.

TJG,
I'm curious as to HOW these people were caught and fined.
Anybody see this algae at LFS around CA? I have!
I guess thats another plus for Chaetomorpha (sp).
Chris

the el dorado county sheriff dept. has a few dep. that have learned 1 thing about Caulerpa(basicly what is legal) then have been going in to offices/homes and then called the dfg on the ppl.... basicly it sucks

The caulepra police???

The caulepra police???

You say the El Dorado sheriff dept is concerned with caulepra?

The reason that this law got passed is because some $#$& let a bunch of Caulerpa loose in the San Diego Bay. Now they are trying to eradicate it before it takes over, because nothing in the ecosystem will feed upon it.

Well It isnt hard to figure out who has marine aquariums............... Just look for an intense glow coming from living oom windows. It is usually blue in color:p

interesting law

interesting law

If you've followed what Caulerpa has done in the Mediterranean Ocean I think you'd have to agree we don't want to lose the majority of the diversty of our near shore habitats. I, for one have seen enough tanks wiped out by caulerpin poisoning to last a lifetime and think chaetomorpha, ulva or gracilaria are just fine for nutrient export. BTW Halimedas bloom too.
