I am using the recipe for normal to low PH (with bakedbaking soda) because my PH gets as low as 7.8 at night. Magnesium is a little on the high side at 1500
well like i said above, the magnesium WAS at 1200-after adding some its at 1400 now. I add the materials in my sump where a mag7 returns and theres an mj for extra flow on my cheato.

No, I'm not sure, but if you get precipitate, I'm also not sure why, and one possibility is that the pH is actually higher than you think. I'd try to keep the pH between 8.0 and 8.5.
OK...is high PH the only cause of ca percipitation? Or can high alkalinity cause it as well? I calibrated my ph pen with two solutions (7 and 10) before testing the PH. Is there a way I can test my PH pen's accuracy?
I am almost positive my PH readings are correct. My magnesium tests are from a sailfert test kit, but my alkalinity and calcium tests are from a cheap "fastest" test kit. I checked the calcium kit against another I knew was accurate and it gave similar results...so the only one left Im thinking could be off is the alkalinity test kit. I should have a sailfert alkalinity test kit tomorrow or saturday...its in the mail on its way - no LFS had one.
I am using a two point calibration of 7 and 10 and the brand of fluid is Hannah from a bottle. In your article that you linked me to, it shows that these fluids are pretty accurate. The fluids were not out of date.
AHHHHH HAAAAAAAH!!!! Got my sailfert alk test today. My DKH is at 9 - other test kit says its at 5.6! All this time it was the lame "Fastest" alkalinity kits (Bought two different ones). I took one back to the LFS and they gave me my money back...the other was too used, so I didnt bother. But yeah...Im happy as a clam now
So I was overdosing the alkalinity which percipitated the calcium.
Checked my alkalinity again...it is now 5.8 DKH according to sailfert. I did a 15 gallon water change with IO salt from DrsfosterandSmith then tested it hours after. Under these circumstances, is it normal for the DKH to go from 9 to 5.8 in a matter of 6 hours?
