Ca reactor

I'm getting back into the hobby from a few years off because of a move, loss of a job and a baby that was on the way a year ago but has been with us 6 months now

Anyway, I have never used a ca reactor and just seeing one in a system makes me very confused. Could anyone post a link to a website that explains what it is good for, how to hook one up and basically what it will help in my new tank? I've searched but not found a article with all the info in one place that's easy to understand
