CAD 39g owners...

it's been much better with mesh mod. stock pump on mine I felt was pulling too much water through skimmer even with valve cocked all the way open. many times I would get real light colored skimmate with little or no smell. not now. I've elevated mine about 1" off partition glass.

after hurricane Ike I neglected my tank for a period & I'm currently dealing with the results of that. I run 2 Koralia 1's & a maxi-jet 1200 for added flow. when doing a water change, if display looks good I syphon water from back chambers removing any build up.

Same here but honestly I only do it like once every 2-3 months. It does accumulate some nasty funk back there.

i'm pushing the 2 month mark, which might explain the gunk. elaw i feel i've seen a thread on your skimmer mesh mod before, can you point me in that direction again?

Cleaning return pump

Cleaning return pump

elaw, thanks for the link.

Anybody disconnect and clean their return pumps on the signature or complete tanks? It looks like the hose is connected to the pump and also at the bulkhead elbow using zip ties, and the space isn't the largest to work around. I'm thinking of grabbing the pump and turning the elbow so the whole thing is inverted and work from there, but I wanted to see if anyone else has cleaned out their return already. I don't like the gunk in the back chambers and it is the only real drawback I see from this tank.

I got the new CAD MH lights and will post some pics after work today.

I have but mine is connected differently than yours I guess. My return hose is only slipped on to the pump and the return bulkhead elbow, no zip ties. It's not a fun task regardless since the tube gets pretty rigid over time and its a tight squeeze as its cut to have the pump rest of the floor of the chamber.

I blindly stuck my hand down there to wiggle it out of the tubing. Not so bad getting it out but getting it back on was a pain. Really have to line it up correctly to get it to slide into the hose. Not too easy when you're doing it one handed but I managed eventually.

Even more fun once you stir up the gunk in the chamber and can't see what your one hand is even doing or if you're close to getting them reattached. That said, 20 minutes of futzing and I was all good again.

Thanks. I figure you can't really think too much about it once you've stirred the gunk up and just have to go for it, like survivorman when he is munching on something.

I'll probably wind up getting rid of the zip ties if it fits snugly.

Yea, my tank is towards a corner so I had my right hand in the tank, the left with the flashlight so I can kind of see what I'm aiming for, one leg wrapped around the back of the tank and my other on the wall. Poor planning on my part in terms of tank placement but it was a good workout.

If I keep tinkering with this skimmer I might just turn it into a very nice skimmer. this is 5 days worth on a lightly stocked tank

new CAD lights

new CAD lights

My apologies for taking so long to post some picks, I've been a little too busy to setup a good photo representation.

For starters, the new fixture (150W MH @ 14k, 2 24W T5 super actinics) is black. Gone are the "curved" ends where the T5s used to point, the entire fixture is straight. One nice thing, the reflectors on the T5 lamps are now some kind of metal and not the old ghetto paper kind some people reported having.

You can see the position of the moonlights. They are both blue and work very well at night, unlike the super bright LEDs on the Outer Orbit. The ballast is DEFINITELY a little ghetto. It also says the wattage is 250W but the lamp is 150W, makes me wonder if you could stick a 250W bulb in there and it would work.

The fixture is quite slim. Ceiling hanging mounts are also included, as are standard legs. There are no instructions but it is pretty self explanatory. In order to clean any of the glass or plastic coverings, you MUST unscrew one side of the fixture. Sort of annoying compared to just slipping it off on the Current USA products. When removing the MH glass for cleaning, you must pull out one moonlight fixture (it's in the way). You just give it a small tug, no big deal.

This is my CAD 39G under a 250W outer orbit w/4x24W T5. All I can say is: YELLOW! This 10K bulb has burned more corals than I thought was possible. I'm trying to save $, but a 20K bulb might be in my future. Good grieve! I have had to start everything in the sand and ever so slowly move it up to where I want it. Royal PITA.

Pretty much the same shot but with the CAD lights. They have been on a fair amount of time on a random QT tank but I am not sure if the bulb is burned in yet. I definitely like the color (I don't know what brand bulb is in it) more, but 250W is 250W: more intense. But then again 250W 10k just makes me blind. What a pickle.

If you have any other questions on the lights let me know. I'd be happy to take actinic on only or lunars only if you really want. I don't have anything to compare these new CAD lights with the older model, but these seem like a set up. I don't think it compares to a Sunpod you can get with a Solaris tank though IMO.

PS--It DOES slightly hang over into the "sump" section of the tank. I'd be more than happy to post some picks of the light legs and how it hangs over.

New pics

New pics

Thought I'd get the thread going agin with some new pictures! I'm still learning with my macro lens, so bear with me.

FTS, I added a lot of spare rock to create some cool shapes and surfaces. Problem is I need some extra flow in some new spots, but nano pumps are cheap. Got my zoa rock right in front and some SPS up top.

My crocea. Hard to see some of the bright blue lines by the mantle, I'll have to play with the lighting next time.

Hard to see these blue zoas, they were in really bad shape for about three weeks but now are open and spreading like its going out of style.

My acro mille up front, green Stylophora in the back, and some broken off monti. digitata branches (they grow like weeds).
