CAD Lights Mini Series Owners Thread

After finding my own interest in this series of tanks, I've had a hard time finding much information or builds of them. I'm guessing this is because they are a rather new line from CAD lights.
I've got an 8 gallon on the way and look forward to setting it up some time this week. I'm hoping within this thread we can bring together all owners of the 4, 8 and 18 gallon mini series to display their tanks and modifications to provide information and motivation for anyone interested in these tanks.
Let's see em!

My 8 gallon came today. I have it full of fresh water to check for leaks. It came with the FP-08 instead of the FP-28. I called and was told that they will ship one out. So will have to wait another week for it to get to North Carolina. Also the label on the light will not stick. They are aware and hope to fix later. So I guess my adventure will begin soon. I was looking at the light and I feel that I can put 2 Ecoxotic EcoPico LED Strip, 453nm Blue, 1- EcoPico LED 2-Way Splitter, and 1- EcoPico LED 12 Volt Power Supply this will cost about $70.00. This would give me my dawn to dusk.

Based on a few other claims with the lighting and pump, I've taken a few measures before my tank has even arrived. I also grabbed some 453nm blues from ecopico to both add more light and have a set of actinic for dawn and dusk as you said. I also grabbed the MJ600 for the pump. I'm getting very impatient...all my equipment orders have came in..but no tank :headwallblue:

yea ill post mine tomorrow too i'm getting a bunch of corals tomorrow including two sps which i hope will survive with the stock light.

I've had the 8g up for about 6 weeks now. The acrylic work is bad. Originally thought it was just an issue with a single piece on the bottom. The entire rear chamber started coming apart yesterday. Also, the pump setup is pretty bad. I would go with a MJ600 and a hydor or other deflector. The 900 or 1200 is going to be overkill unless you have a ton of SPS to reduce the overall flow.

Its unfortunate that a tank that looks as good as it does has a few issues. What part of the acrylic comes apart? Is it the seals/glue?

Guess I'll start I did had problem with the cadlight 8g too. When it first arrive it came in broken. The second shipment the bottom acrylic was loose and in a week the bottom half that is glue to glass broke off but the other half stay put because of the weight of sand pushing it against the glass therefore no sand goes in and therefore I don't mess with that part anymore since i got the temperature of the heater to my liking. Also the pump that came with the tank broke in less than a week it work kinda but it make a horrible loud scratchy noise, so i just use it for waterchange and replace it with hydro pico evolution 400 (100gph) i wanted the 600 but i dont know if it will fit in the back compartment but the 400 fit loosely but with the hydor flo it fitted nicely and combine with the koralia nano 240 as my only water movement. I also cut the back out following AustinChap method for the chaeto. Even though it was a bad start everything is turning out really nice now.

This is my first saltwater tank however i been keeping freshwater since i was 9 and have degree in biochem so this wasn't to hard for me but I'm still learning about the coral though, they are very new to me. I order the base rock from reefcleaners and place one tiny live rock from store and added two frozen shrimp in the tank for about 3 days to jump start the tank. The diatom hit in about 1.5 weeks even though there was still ammonia left. After Ammonia turn to nitrite i order the CUC from reefcleaners. In all it took about 3.5 week for it to completely cycle now my tank is currently sitting at:
ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate 0.

After CUC (he gave me so much snails lol i really like that site) i waited another week to add my first fish.
Female Red Scooter Dragonate. ( I made sure she was eating frozen food before i bought her, she a real pig got her to eat everything even NLS pellet)

Another week i bought some Coral from local reefer so i got a really good deal on all these corals, they all very tiny and using the stock led:

Coral list:
bright and big orange ricordia
NEON GREEN tyree toadstool*
Sunset monti
alien eye chalice
White Pom Pom Xenia
red merletti blastos
Duncan two type a purple one and green one
Branching Dendro
purple sponge

Next week I'm going to add a single ocellaris clownfish.

Believe it or not but the LED was strong enough to bleach the chalice so i had to move it down and left it on the sand under the rock for a bit till it recover.

This LED light doesn't look like much, but everything I have put in the tank is responding really well to it. I have some zoas, lps at the sand level and a nice purple long tentacled anemone at the top and everything is doing great.

Nice looking setup kuro. Nice to hear about the lights...I ordered some actinic strips to add in more blue for dawn, dusk and overall appearance so im hoping its enough for anything I decide to add. We need more fts and experiences! :beerj

Now that I'm back from vacation I'll have to start adding some more corals.

Do you guys think i still have enough room for maybe some acan lord on the sand or acan get to big?

Should be fine if you get a smaller colony. They grow fairly slow as far as taking up sand space. Grab a couple heads and see how fast this tank can make em shine.

+1 on the acrylic work for the filter section! The bottom section on mine was broken off when I received it and I used some Silicone to re-attach it. The outside walls of the acrylic completely came apart this weekend while simply REMOVING it from my 8 gallon (I also have the 4 gallon)! I am going to contact CADLights about it and see what they will do. On a side note, I did come across a new video on YouTube by someone who works for CADLights that was showing their 18 gallon mini series (it uses two of the 8 gallon light fixtures side-by-side for its lighting). I suspect that if we all continue to have major issues with these tanks, CADLights might finally respond if we start posting comments on their public YouTube videos in which they are trying to market these tanks! Just a thought...

As many have already stated, the fp-08 is a weak little pump. I think I will stick with it for now in my 4 gallon as it seems to be "just enough" flow for that tank as I am going to be stocking it with some small inverts only; no corals. But the fp-08 for the 8 gallon is a joke. I've tried numerous options for pumps with my 8 gallon, and when I have time I'll upload videos I took of the different setups. The most comical one is with a Maxi-jet 1200 mounted straight through (i.e. no 90 degree tubing) and connected to a Hydor Flo. To say it is too much flow would be an understatement! lol After all my tests, I ordered a Maxi-jet 600 and plan to mount it straight through and connected to a Hydor Flo. Austin Chap, you have a video in your thread that shows the flow with what you listed to be an MJ 600. Is that correct, or was it the MJ 900 you were using for a while? From the video it looks like you have it mounted straight through. You mentioned the 90 degree you used with the MJ 900 really reduced flow, and I verified the reduced flow from a 90 degree in my tests. Since the Max-jets seem to fit mounted straight through, I decided to use that setup so that I could get maximum flow from a pump, allowing me to select a less powerful pump that should produce less heat (heat is gonna be an issue for me here in South Georgia in a couple months! lol). I'll let you know how the MJ 600 does when it arrives and I get it mounted.

I purchased some egg crate to make custom media baskets for my filtration. I planned to run filter floss, Purigen, and ChemiPure elite, which is how I have my Biocube 14 and Nanocube 24 setup, although I use inTank's media baskets for those. The problem is, given how poorly the acrylic fits on these tanks, I don't think even 1/2 of the water circulating through the pump will actually go thru the filtration media. The other issue I am seeing is almost no surface skimming from the stock setup, even with a more powerful pump. Have others had this issue, and if so, has anyone devised a way to fix it?

Regarding the lights on these tanks, as others have said, they are rather white. I have my 4 gallon setting right next to a 24 gallon Nanocube, and the cube's lights (50-50/10K-Actinic) are MUCH bluer than the CADLights. I have the same Reef Saver rock in each of them, so it is easy to tell the difference in the lighting with them side-by-side. The rocks look bluish white in the cube, and yellowish in the CADLights. Once I post pics and vids you'll be able to "see" the difference, for those interested.

Overall, I am regretting the purchase of these tanks! I see that JBJ is coming out with new rimless designs that look REALLY nice, and I suspect won't have all the issues these tanks have had. The JBJ's don't come with a light so you can select what you want from the start. There's no pricing on the tanks yet, so they may be expensive.

I'll update with pics and vids once I get more time to mess with mine next week. Good luck to all!!!!

Its upsetting to hear about all these issues. I'm receiving mine for sure tomorrow and I'm already nervous to open the box and see what I find. I really like the look of these tanks so I feel I wouldn't mind doing a few improvements/upgrades to make it work. I'll be sure to post my unboxing and discoveries tomorrow...Hopefully I don't need to alter to much to get it running right.

 Finally came in! Nothing broken..lights work. I will have a build thread in a few days and at least some pictures tonight...I was working on it right up until work. Everything is running smooth now though. I did have to add airline tubing to the back to create a seal between the chambers and I also am using an mj600 instead of the stock pump. The water is still cloudy so I will have to finish scape later and get a teaser pic on.

In the video I was using the 600 straight through the back. I couldn't stand the noise from the 600 but I think I just had a bad pump.
I'm currently using the 90 with the fp28 which looks to be about the same flo as the 600 was.

Getting the kinks worked out on this tank is the key. I actually compare it to my JBJ biocube. There are lots of little things I hate about the biocube, but once I worked them all out and the tank is up and running, I love it.

Same with this tank. Lot's of little annoying things about the tank, but it's up and running and I love it.

If I could change just one thing it would be the color of the light. So if someone figures out a good way to mod it, please post it up!
