Cad lights pls-100 issues

So my 65 gallon has been up and running for a year. I run a cad lights pls100 since day one. I'm getting sick and tired of constantly having to check it and readjust it. It sits in 6.5 inches of water. The water level never fluctuates. Yet this skimmer today was bubbling over so much with normal water that water got outside my sump. Please tell me what I am doing wrong or what skimmer I should switch to that will it in 6.5in x 11.5in foot print.

I don't usually push Aquamaxx on other threads but a ConeS CO1 (or JNS CO1) would rock that system. It may be a little tight though. It's been a while (year+) since I measured mine.
