CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Re the fan, I actually ordered a replacement from F&S a couple of weeks ago, as the power connector in my stock fan kept shorting out on me. The replacement fan I got is similar to the original, but not an exact duplicate. Works just as well.

Hey guys, like many I've been following this wonderful thread. I've had a long and rocky road with my cadlights, including several missing pieces, broken sealent, etc. This thread was my only hope for any instructions :)

Now I realized the durso drain is too low - yes indeed I have been shipped the wrong durso. There was no way for me to know and now it's all plumbed and siliconed and whatnot. So my question is: A durso that is ~9.5'' from the bottom of the tank...basically the only problem would be the waterfall noise from the overflows, right?

Second, my pump for the skimmer does not include any nipple to connect the air pipe to. Anybody had a similar issue or any ideas where the air pipe connects?

Thank you so much, this thread is the only hope of someone like me who is a beginner in saltwater fun to figure out this tank system, which I would not recommend to anyone starting out.

Euro-reef... check those impellers

Euro-reef... check those impellers

Yep, I finally got around to pulling the Euro-reef 39g pro skimmer for cleaning, as I'd been noticing decreased performance and a lot of noise lately. Sure 'nuff, both mesh wheels were pretty much totally shredded.

I got on the phone with Robert at Euro-reef, and he's sending out replacements. He said they've made two changes in the impellers since the original units. (I had one of the first bunch off the production line)

My skimmer took a beating as well... I sent an email this afternoon.

The mesh in one of the pumps is fine, but the other one is eaten up and had actually siezed up inside the pump. I hope the warranty claim goes smoothly. This is a bit of a disappointment considering the cost of these skimmers but if the warranty is handled well than I will have nothing to complain about.

Yea one thing euro-reef is good about is standing by their product. I have a question. For everyone with this skimmer, do u have to constantly adjust the height as the sponge on the bottom slowly get clogged? It's a little annoying that if I don't clean the sponge in the bottom of the skimmer weekly it has to be moved slightly every day or do as the sponge slowly cloggs up. When it's running it skims better than any other nano skimmer but I wish there was som sort of 'cap' I could put on the bottom for consistancy.

I have this skimmer and have had all the same issues as you. I have not cleaned the sponge very much, but when I do, the skimmer needs to be lowered a lot. In fact, at fist, the bubbles would not go high enough. I am not sure if clenaing it more often will help, but I am going to try that. I am getting new mesh wheels sent too.

Theblongeat I can go without cleaning the sponge is 2 weeks. Anyhong more than that and the pressure pushes the sponge out the bottom

No problem with my sponge, darrow... I only clean it when I take the skimmer out and clean it - which is about once every 4-5 weeks.

Just spoke with Robert he is a really nice guy, As of right now i checked my impellers and they are fine. Maybe its because i am running a bare bottom and there is no sand in my system. My skimmer was ordered in the beginning of FEB. The good news is he said the new impeller material is made of much stronger material.
As far as the sponge on the bottom clogging up, He makes them cutstom on the skimmers as they are ordered, he suggested that i try and run it without the sponge. Robert also stated that what might work is to use a rubber type of stopper and make wholes in the stopper.

anyways he was very nice and offered right away to send me new impellers even thought mine were fine, i told him to hold on and i will check mine every week this way we can see when the old material had stopped being used, I may have a skimmer that is on the boderline of being made with the new material.

So I was putting together the skimmer that came with the tank yesterday and it seems something is broken on the pump. The edges sort of feel like something was snapped off and there doesn't seem to be any place to fit the airline tubing into.

james... Got any pictures? I'm not even sure where my stock skimmer is at anymore?!

I got my new impellers in last week and I am back up and running again! These are clearly better than the older ones... and I will have my tank rescaped by a member from my local club soon!!! I am excited to add a bunch of rock and get some structure going!

Um it might be hard to get pictures on here I forget how to do it? I just have a camera phone so it might be hard to get a good picture, I'll see what I can do though.

Hi all. Just received my 39g Pro yesterday and was staring to put things together. I'm sure I'll come up with more questions, but for now....... Where is everyone putting the HQI ballast? I was thinking of putting in a shelf, on the side and above the sump, but was kind of wondering about the heat and humidity. Any thoughts or suggestions. TIA

Your ballast is external? New fixture... that is the black one, correct?

I have the old fixture, as most of us do, and it has an internal ballast.

Yep, the new one. The ballast is seperate and it's about 5 x 7 x 8. I was trying to get everything in the cabinet, but this may just have to sit out.

NO!!! DO NOT PUT THE BALLAST IN THE CABINET!!!

Sorry for yelling, but that is a big no-no! Put it as far away from the tank as you can. Anything that generates heat, other than the sump light, should be kept out of the cabinet.

Like I said above I'm almost positive my skimmer pump is broken. I don't know what to do because I'm sure it is too late to have a new one shipped out to me because it is about a year old.... Should I just get a new one? Is there a better skimmer out there that anyone would suggest since I'm most likely going to have to end up buying a new one anyway?
