CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Just installed the vortechs!!!! I dont think they are that loud really. I can hear the motor hum a little, but so far I dont see a big deal. They also say it may actually make more noise for the 1st 24 hours so if it quiets down even more it will be close to silent. Very strong flow from these puppies!
I did mount them on the sides and looking at my tank I think it may work if I point the sump returns straight down into the back of the rocks. I feel like it will stir things up down there and also throwing the sump filtered water straight down and back might also filter more tank water. Thoughts?

Remember if you point the sump returns down, your display will most likely drain all the way down to that level when you power off the return pump. Unless you have plenty of space in your sump, that sucker will overflow all over your floor.

Be carefull! Glad the MP's are to your liking!!!!!

I did take into account the tank draining, but If I loop the returns up before I point them down I think I will be fine. Ill set it up later and give it a try.

sounds like fun!!!!

If it doesn't work for you you could always do a couple J tubes off the back and run them off another pump.

I just bought a better return pump: EHEIM 1262 UNIVERSAL HOBBY PUMP from Amazon. Has anyone used this as a return? I did not even think about the dimensions so I hope it fits. Also, it's max head is 12 feet and the GPH is 900. Is that too much?

I used the eheim 1262 for a few days but returned it because I couldn't tune it down enough to work with the overflow/durso. I switched to the tunze 1073.020, which I love, but is very low flow. Might want the 1073.040; but the head pressure loss is a consideration and you'd want to get your flow from in-tank powerheads.

i put a ball valve on it to choke back the flow. i have a gate valve now that might have been better suited for the application (more of a fine-tune precision).

you could definitely get it to work with a herbie drain, but i didn't want to have to replace the durso. scroll back a bunch of pages and you can probably read about me dealing with noise.

Well, yes- the overflow can definitely handle it. If you run the drain at a siphon, that would keep it quiet, but I was always too worried about a clogged drain leading to a overflow

so, i've started thinking i don't have enough light to make my sps happy.

what do you guys think about sticking a retrofit kit into the stock cad light fixture to make it a 250w HQI instead of 150w? or would i have to just replace the whole light if i wanted to do that?

so, something like this one: http://www.hellolights.com/250whlmhretrofitkithqi.aspx

can you even do that? i've never really thought about it before.

I hear ya! One could always just run a float switch off the return pump so if the return clogs, the pump chamber would lower too much and the float switch would kill the return pump until it slowly drained back to level.

If the dimensions are fine then it should work but I really think heat would be too much of an issue because of the tight low profile of that case. I think you would need to have some ramped up fans in that to dissapate the heat or else you would cook everything.

I love my Lumenmax3. Super clean hanging off the ceiling, fully height adjustable and sooooo much easier to access everything now.

ya, i like that idea -- you could also put the float switch in the overflow so that it wouldn't be affected by things like topping off/etc.

you'd end up in trouble if the drain clogged and the float switch failed, but those seem like they'd be unlikely to happen simultaneously (famous last words).

i like the lumenmax -- but do you miss the actinic supplementation?

I don't need it with the 250watt 14k phoenix. The phoenix 250/14k is very blue at 250 and even more so at 175 and 150 with the lumatek dimmable ballast. I did however pick up a chinese 12led moonlight made by Bubble Magus that I'm currently trying to figure out how to mount. I liked the moonlights alot on the stock cad fixture so I want that lights out look back.

I know what you mean about the cad Magnetic ballast losing intensity over time. Mine definately did after a year. That's what pushed me to the lumenmax. I love that dimmable ballast not only for the variable output, but the fact that it barely gets warm to the touch and is almost half the size of the old magnetic ballast.

Just a follow up in case anyone was wondering.... It does work fine to point the returns down as long as they are looped up. It is easier to explain with the pic, also the return was off because I was feeding so that is why the water level is so low. No overflowing of the sump though.

Oh yeah also forgot to mention... has anyone checked out the new CAD LEDs? They look sick!!!! I kind of want one, but Im not sure it would be that much of an upgrade from the CAD LEDs I already have. Their new LED nanos look awesome too.
