CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Assuming you are going to run them in the sump under the cabinet, they are not loud. They do make a hum though but nothing that is noticeable over the tanks overflow noise. They will quiet down more after break in. The QuietOne pumps are really good quality but IMO are expensive, generate alot of heat/electricity and are not as good under a fair amount of head pressure.

I like the rio hyperflow pumps and the smaller Maxi-Jet utility pumps (not the powerheads they are black and sort of green). Both work great for me put out low heat use less power than most. The nice thing about the smaller Maxi-Jet utility pumps is you can control the flow a little bit with them. I use a Rio in my CAD and like it really well too. I use a Maxi in my frag tank and it was worked flawless for a long time.
Just my 2 cents =).

Kind of a stupid question here. Does anybody use a magnetic glass cleaner for day to day glass cleaning? I use one on a different tank but in the CAD with the bow front it didn't clean the glass so well did fine on the sides. I was wondering if anybody has or knew of a cleaner magnet that works good on the front panel of our tanks. Maybe my other magnet was just old and the cleaner part was to flat to clean it well or something but it just made little lines in the scum and would have taken an hour to get it all off with the magnet so I just resorted to arm in the tank method. Looking for something I can do easily. I saw a little nano magnet round thing maybe that would work. Saw the expensive hammerhead cleaners but not willing to throw $75 down on something unless I know it's going to clean the bow front. Any ideas?

I have a magnavore that I use for the back walls but it is super strong so I use it just for the stubborn stuff (coralline etc.). The best for me has been using the med mag float with a thin layer of pond filter pad cut to the size of the magnet. It allows the magnet to conform to the curve on the front glass and works great for me. The only stubborn areas are the bottom edges and corners which I remove by hand with a small coarse filter pad.

One of these days I'm going to have to get after the coraline on my glass in the corners. I try to get it when I do WC but there are a few spots that are tough to reach that are building up good. Mostly in the corners. As far as the back goes I don't mess with that much at all lol. I figure it can encrust lol. I'm more worried about the parts I look through. A couple areas in the back of mine have stuff growing on them like palys, and zoas, and gsp. The Gsp is watched though lol I don't want it taking over the rock but where it's growing on the back glass it can't get onto any rocks. Anyways I think it's easier to get GSP off glass than coraline. Plus it sort of looks cool there for now. My YWG lives in that area with all the GSP and digs it lol.
I put a yellow wrasse in the tank about 10 days ago. He promptly burrowed into the sand. I saw him twice in the first 5 days but haven't seen him since. I dug around in the sand the other day and he didn't turn up. lol. It sucks. I'm sure he's probably dead since I haven't seen him for almost a week, but can't find even a fin of him. I don't have any crabs in the tank either. I guess maybe my snails or pair of serpent stars may have taken care of it. I keep hoping he will just pop up. Dang wrasse anyways. =( I HATE losing fish. Feel like I did something wrong when it happens. I realize a lot of fish that come from fish shops are already not the healthiest, otherwise they wouldn't have been caught out in the wild in the first place, but I still feel that way.

The serpent stars may have closed over his burrow and killed him. They have been known to do the old umbrella trick-LOL and hang above a meal and wait to close in. Mine have never killed any of my fish probably because they are constantly moving but the burrowers stay put alot so maybe the star saw an opportunity. Who knows, he may still be in there. Some people have said that theirs sometimes hide for weeks if they are harrassed. Keep an eye out because you never know!

Many of the fish in the shops are caught with cyanide and while they look healthy in the shops, their immune system is damaged because of the toxin and they are not quick to recover unless given ideal conditions. The best way to combat fish loss due to this is an isolation (QT) tank but many don't have one.

Sorry to hear about your fish...

About cleaning the corners of the tank...I have a couple of fancy scrapers and neither of them gets into the corners as well as a free scraper I got from Premium Aquatics. Kinda funny...

The wrasse was in a QT for 30 days...but I run my QT bare bottom so I can check for any pests. I QT everything wet lol. I'm pretty anal about it. I put LR up on PVC stilts and bait the bottom of the tank to see if anything comes out like mantis and things like that. He ate and all in the QT but he just might have been not great I don't know.
I was thinking about just getting a scraper from the hardware store. All the fancy ones are like $20...I thought maybe a $5 scraper at the hardware store may work just as well. Need to decide on what type though...metal plastic etc..maybe some sort of spatula or something?

I got a special-made jumbo-sized Nimble Nano from Jerome at nimblenano.com -- worked wonders, and even cleans the curved corners. i would highly recommend.

i just sold my stock return pump (and stock skimmer and stock fuge light and cracked sump!), but I haven't received my new eheim yet, so i had to go to petco and grab a quietone 2200 to use for a few days while i wait for the eheim to get here. it's only 550ish gph, but it's only for a few days.

anyway, turned the thing on, and it doesn't sit still in the sump.. it's just going to settle somewhere (no suction cups). it doesn't have a rattle like the stock return pump did, but again, it's lower flow. and, it also has a deep hum that it makes in the sump (again, this may be due to not having suction cups). i would say the actual decibels have been reduced by substituting in the QuietOne, but the noticeable sound has not necessarily been reduced. just relating my experience after one night!

What sump are you using now?
Why don't you put the pump on something? Do you have any suction cups laying around from stuff like maxi jets or something? You could always figure a way to attach them, or get a piece of foam like a filter sponge for ponds and set the pump on that maybe and quite it down even more.

still using the stock sump -- i had two. the first one that was shipped to me got a small crack in it in transit, so they sent me another one and i got to keep the first one.

as far as suction cups, i actually don't have anything else laying around -- although I've been in the hobby for a while, i've never bought much outside of stock equipment for my tanks. the only extra ANYTHING i have laying around is the stock pump from my 8g biocube, which i replaced with a minijet 606.

i like the foam idea, but the thing is still just going to be "free-floating" in the sump! so, i guess i am either going to have to deal with it or go find some suction cups.

If you had MJ 900 or 1200 accessory parts that come with the pumps that would work awsome. You could take the suction cup bracket that comes with the pumps and put it on the bottom and run a big rubber band or zip ties around the pump to hold it.

That's what I was thinking Tivo lol. I have tons of that sort of stuff laying around. I could mail it out to you if you want Tim.

Not much going on lately. Everybody must be pretty busy with the Christmas holidays. I know I have been. Think I might be starting to have some sort of algae issue UHOH. I've been seeing some red algae creeping up. I don't know if it's a type of HA or what I have never seen it before. It's red and it's super attached to the rock. It's really short right now but growing in clumps. I took a piece of rock out of the tank and tried to remove it to get a better feel for what it may be. This stuff is stuck! I used a very very stiff bristled tile brush on it and pretty much had to take the top layer of the rock to get the algae to come off. Had to scrub very hard for 5 mins or so just on one spot. I'll post a pic of the stuff and see what you guys think. I don't get why I'm having this or whats up. I don't feed much. Make my own food so no phosphates in the food issues. Could this algae have come with the rock? Is it just a common HA strain? Most of all how do I get rid of it? I have noticed patches of it popping up. I guess it could have gotten a start from poor skimming the first couple months of my setup running. Hmm any ideas? To get this stuff off the rock I would have to take the whole pile down and scrub a long time because there are tufts of it growing here and there, and like I said it's not like the green stuff you can just pull off if it grows someplace. Like my clam always gets a bit of green algae around on his shell. I figured it might be because of the way clams use nitrate for food and process etc. but it's not a terrible amount, like a couple months go by and I clean him up a bit. I'll try to get a pic up later today when the lights are on.

If it's red slime it should come off with a turkey baster. Show us a pic and we'll see if we can help. Does it look like round coralline patches but dark reddish purple? If so It's coralline. The dark reddish purple patches grow under lower light spectrums but they are still coralline. You mention that it is patches so I'm thinking it may not be either so get up a pic and we'll see.

If it is slime then shorten your halide light cycle to about 6 hrs a day. Your corals won't be affected. Do that for about 3 days and see where you're at. How is the Deltec skimming?

Mag 12 or Rio Hyperflow 20F or 26F pumps. They are fairly inexpensive and operate well under head pressure.

Go with vinyl tubing until you get things set up and running smoothly.

Good luck and happy reefing!

So I think I'm going to get the Rio Hyperflow 26F. It mentions making sure sand and debris doesn't go through the pump, should there be like a filter to stop this or is it not a big deal?

Also is 90$ a fair price for a new one?

thats about the going $ rate. the pumps come with a batting prefilter in the intake cover so you should be okay. You shouldn't have a sand problem if the pump is in the last chamber of the stock cad sump. I'm assuming you are going to tee off the pump from the stock cad sump to the fuge-right? If you do that then put a ball valve off the tee to the fuge so you can adjust flow to a slower rate. The 26F is very powerfull so you may want to put a valve right off the pump and a smaller in line valve off the tee to the fuge for fine tuning. You don't want a ton of flow running through the fuge.
