Caes's New breeding setup

Well, just for fun, I thought I would create my build thread. The room is actually almost complete, and of course I can think of about 100 things I wish were different.

I figured I would walk through it with all of you and use this as an opportunity to hear all of your critiques.

Right now I am sort of have a thing for cardinal's, so most of my tanks have cardinals doing the 'busy' in them. I have 2 pairs of Bangaii, one pajama and one ruby. I am trying to get a pair of Oche's but not alot of luck yet getting them to live. I also would like to decide on a pair of clowns and a pair of dartfish. Thinking about helfrichi (yes I know I like impossible). The final tank will likely go to a pair of dotties, but again, undecided.

I started breeding Bangaii with my breeding tanks plumbed off of my main system, which was roughly 400g. I have downsized the main system as I have moved all of my breeding into the breeding...well tiny space...=) I got to the point where the fry tanks were starting to overload the main system's ability to keep up, so I started looking into doing a breeding setup.

For starters I can outline the things that I wanted.

1) Very small area to work with, roughly 200 sq ft. This is located in my basement. Woot...another basement breeder! =) I have another 200 or so sq feet I can work with in the adjacent room. And, well, if I can do more than dream grand dreams, another 1000 sq ft in the same room.
2) Wanted the capacity to care for 8 pairs and the fry.
3) Wanted to be able to control individual tanks to be linked/unlinked from the 'main' system. I am a fan of maintaining solid water parameters for fry. I know this is easier to accomplish with Bangaii than most fish, but I wanted to make this an essential part of my system.
4) Wanted the system to be able to do more than just service the brood stock, meaning be able to produce corals that favor dirty environments.
5) Energy efficient...at least as best we can be with a hobby that sucks the power out of my wall.

I will try to walk through the different parts of my setup as I have time. As I said, there are already tons of things I would like to be different...but hey that is half the fun.

So to start with is my Target thermal curtains. I didn't build walls, or try to make an air tight setup. I figured, I don't want it air tight, but I do want it to be able to retain heat. I didn't want expensive, and this was about the cheapest route I could go. So far it is proving to have the capacity to maintain about a 10 degree difference from the outside.

So far i have not had any humidity issues.

So this is picture #1. :mixed:

Well,

I was going to post a little bit more tonight, but silly me left the camera plugged into the USB last night and drained the battery. So no pictures.

As I mentioned, as all of us that have a wife, our goals often get turned to the side. My wife certainly has been tolerant of my hobby, but she quickly kabashed my 200 sq ft area, and reduced it down to 100 sq ft. Fish, wife, fish, wife, still deciding =)

So now the goal was to figure out how to fit all of this into this tiny space. While I know that there is no practical way of fitting 4-6 months of growout for 8 pairs + broodstock into 100 sq ft. I figured I could squeeze quite a bit in there.

So, I lied...got my phone out. (i.e.....read crappy pictures..isn't it amazing...5 megapixels use to be awsome in a digital camera..digress)

So let's start with the broodstock tanks. I needed a kick to get me to actually move my breeding tanks off of my main system, and a local feshwater breeder selling off a setup was a nice kick. So for a wopping $175 I inherited 8 16g tanks (one busted), a tiered stand, new 50w heaters for each tank and a few odds and ends.

Forgive me, remember I only have 100sq ft...so I can't get even 10 feet away to take a picture. =) Also, the tank outsides need a cleaning, so shoot me. =)

So basically my broodstock area is 16g tanks, yes 16, one 10g atm to replace the one broken tank. I will replace the 10g when tanks go on sale in the fall, as they want $40+ for these tanks.

Into each portion of the setup, I have incorporated a sump using a 60g feeder from Farm & Fleet, a farm supplement store. $60

Next post I will go into some of the things I did and did not do as I installed this first set of tanks. Some ideas came from other breeder setups, some came from Wittenrich book, some from my own empty head.

Currently there are two pairs of Bangaii and one pair of Pajamas in these tanks holding. One pair of Ruby Cardinals, not holding. There is one set of bangaii babies and one lone Bangaii who's mate didn't quite make it.

Total cost of this first rack: $175 for setup, $60 for sump, $30 in PVC. The rest I had laying around. I am adding in dollar amounts so I can actually add up how much I spent, because at the moment I don't have a clue.

Yes and No, I will explain how the sumps are working when I get a chance, so far they seem to be working out good.

Last few days been really busy and I got my new calc reactor and mp40s today for my DT, so I was playing with them tonight. =0 I have to ramp up for release of PJs early in the week too...so....

I will try to get to another post this weekend.

OK, so I guess here is build thoughts that I went through with what you see. I will do in sections.

Part I. The Brainstorm

I went and picked up the used setup and now I needed to figure out what to do with it. I decided that it was going to get set against the wall with just enough space to allow my drainage to be behind the setup. So i plopped it on the floor and set the tanks on it.

As I looked over the tanks, things I needed to figure out were:

1) How was I going to install a sump, for cheap at that
2) How was I going to do drainage
3) Were all of the tanks going to be linked
4) How was I going to circulate the water
5) How did I get the max bang out of my electricity
6) How was I going to filter the water
7) How was I going to do water changes
8) How could I maximize old equipment that was laying around

I may edit this list as I go, in case I missed something basic that I recall thinking when building this.

I will walk through each one and share what my thoughts were on each.

I was typing out #1 and we lost power, unfortunately I do not have time to redo the post..so I will aim to get to tomorrow.
