Calcium Dispenser Kit 68

Roger,

If I'm understanding the website correctly, I can use this to dose Kalk? Do I just put Kalk in the calcium dispenser, and nothing else would be necessary?

Roger, mine is having a problem, I think. I installed my osmolator with calcium dispenser 2 months ago. I have a 30 gal tank and had been using 2 tsp of kalk each week. I am always careful not to spill any of the powder in the topoff water container so as to avoid any calcification of the pump. In the beginning, the kalk water was cloudy white when entering the tank. I've noticed that over the past month, my Ca levels in the tank have been dropping. I subsequently noted that the "kalk" water being added to the tank has been quite clear, and I believe that the pump is not mixing my kalk adequately. When I manually shake the kalk container, this is resolved. The water flow is still quite strong, so I don't think the pump has malfunctioned. Also, I have not changed my head height at all. Is this a common problem, and can you recommend a fix? Thanks in advance.

Kalkwasser is not meant to be a sole source of Calcium, the solution should be relatively clear. Kalkwasser is useful in reef tanks because it binds free CO2, raises KH and precipitates PO4-, it also raises pH slightly but I would never expect it to maintain Ca unless the only thing using the Ca was coralline algae and some leathers. It might be useful to clean the reactor with vinegar and reset it up and up the does to 3 teaspoons but if their is any real demand you will need to supplement the calcium supply with something else.

I use the osmolator and the limewater mixer, my friend and I agree ( reefer with same top-off set-up) that this limewater top off method is basically good for maintaing the PH. I have to dose 1 tsp of baking soda/day, and a few tsp's of CaCl2 every few days to maintain Alk and Ca levels. Probably in a tank with soft corals only you may be able to use lime to maintain Ca levels.
