calcium/kalk reactors

what are the pros and cons of the calcium reactors
what are the pros and cons of a kalk reactor
which one is better
and what do you use

for an SPS tank...get a ca reactor because depending on your evaporation and the amount of co2 in your water kalk will more then likely fall short on the alk/calcium demand.

Run both for the best solution.

Kalk and calcium reactor together

"Run both for the best solution."

I've got a kalk reactor and need to add a calcium reactor to keep up with the calcium demand in my tank. Right now, I'm able to maintain calcium levels by running a fan to increase evaporation (my kalk reactor is tied into my top off). This keeps my calcium at around 400, but my alkalinity is on the high side at 11.5 to 12. I wondering how to run a kalk reactor and calcium reactor together and still maintain optimum levels of alkalinity and calcium? I know that reducing the evaporation rate will lower the alk levels, but how do you maintain a balance between the two? Anyone doing this?

Thanks, Geary

A calcium reactor will maintain Alkalinity and Calcium, just as a kalk reactor does, it just does it differently. There are benefits to running both especially if you have to force evaporation so that the kalk reactor can keep up.

I set my kalk reactor to handle all normal evaporation and have my calcium reactor running on low. You will have to monitor things for a few days until you can dial in the bubble count and flow.

A calcium reactor is more of an Alkalinity reactor in my opinion. Most media used is composed of 2 parts alk to every 1 part cal. I also vote for using both reactors for optimum results.

Hmm, I'm for running both at the same time... or my method.. just do water changes enough to keep levels up, but I don't have a huge SPS garden :)
