The only place I have to put my reactor is right next to the refugium which is a 75 gallon tank with a 4 bulb 36" T5 unit. Its really bright and has coralined the inside of my skimmer, will this bother the calcium reactor too?
That should work. I use the black plastic ground cover used for weed control in gardens. Same as the black trash bags, only a thicker material. Its just what I had laying around at the time.

Calcium reactor just isn't algae friendly. The same low pH that dissolves the media will prevent the growth of coraline and probably any other kinds of hair algae, while flow through the unit will discourage cyano. I wouldn't sweat it.
