I have a 100 gallon aquarium, I want 10x turn over= 1000 gph moving through some kind of pump or filter- internal or external or both.
Sometimes you want to split the circulation.
for like, say....a sump with 5x turnover
I have a 75 gallon sump. I want 5 times turnover through just the sump. I will figure I need a pump that will push about 375-400 gph back into my display- and you need to figure for losses due to distances and turns..
Now I need another 5x turnover in the tank NOT connected to the sump (using a closed loop, or by powerheads)-
The two systems combined will achieve a 10x turn over in my 100 gallon tank.
Clear as mud?

Total flow of all pumps / returns in the tank divided by gallons in tank. For example, I have 2X Tunze Streams that produce about 1600gph each, 1 Eheim return pump that produces about 800. 4000/125 = 32X turnover.
