Cali Tort Vs. Oregon Tort: Your Impressions...?

Supposedly, these are the classic attributes:

Cali: More purplish of a blue, with green center tissue coloring under some (most) lighting. A little more "drab" overall compared to Oregon. Much faster, vigorous grower than Oregon. More pronounced corallites than Oregon.

Oregon: Much more spectacular blue overall than Cali under the right conditions. Much more solid blue coloration overall than Cali under the right conditions. More balanced and delicate corallite growth. Slower grower than Cali. Much more expensive than Cali.

So what does everyone think? Is this mainly bunk? What have your experiences with these Acropora tortuosas been like...?

This is my cali or ora blue tort....

And this is my Oregon...

Todd,
I agree what you said there. But the Oregon Tort is much more blue intense.
My vote here goes to the OT hands down.
The ORA just is a massive grower for sure.Which makes it impressive.Because it's known for it's long outreaching branches.

I just got a frag of the oregon tort and it is more blue buy I think I still like the cali better. I actually like the purple on the cali tort my self. As far as growth I can't compare yet.

How about the Benette tort?.. In my tank Oregon is much brighter than ORA as well..

Are you talking about the Shawn Bennett tort? If so I got that one too and it is the same as the Cali and ORA IMO.

One more thing for all you that have a cali or ORA blue tort I have noticed mine does not like nitrates at all, the lower the nitrates the faster the growth. I don't know about the oregon though.

Hey Taylor, what is that tort colony you have in your tank? Is that Oregon or Cali...?

That would be a cali tort.

Bennete and Becker torts look the same as the cali to me. I would love to see pics that prove me wrong though :)

Todd, I would agree 100% with what you say about the OT an CT

The oregon tort. is the bluest coral there is in the right conditions. It's also the touchiest,if i move it just 2 inches it looses it's color instantly and stays that way for a week.

Its very cliche for this thing to be my favorite, as its many peoples favorite.............but it is.

I like the cali as well, but its not a must have

like everyone else said be for. They are both nice acros to have but the oregon tort takes the cake. Its one of the brightest blue corals I have seen. As if you tank is in good shape one of the best looking once as well. If you look at my avatar that is what mine looks like.

I don't think one would be able to see the subtle differences in the two pieces between the Becker and the Cali, unless you had them and were familliar with each piece. At 20 feet or 20 miles and hour, all look like a dumb 'ol blue stick, but there are subtle differences unique to each to be appreciated.

You can read about where they all originated from here.

Another notable "Blue Tort" is the Myagi Tort (Austera).

I thought about being a smart aleck and asking which "Bennett" Tort you guys were talking about? The Yellow one or the Blue one?

With the Oregon.......with how long it takes to grow, you earn every inch. If you treat it right, its that bright blue day in and day out consitently. Which is probably why people like it so much......labor of love.

I have all three Bennett, Cali or ORA and the OT. The OT is the nicest blue IMO out of the three and one of the nicest blue acro that's out there. To bad it such a slow grower.
