Cali Tort Vs. Oregon Tort: Your Impressions...?

they are color and grow differently and they are next to each other under the same light. they all beautiful..i like them all.

Cali tort for is a fast grower and the OT is much slower. I like tem all as I have the CT,OT,SBT and BT. oH BTW some people believe the OT is not a tort at all.

Haven't had the Oregon Tort, however I got too much blue tortness in my tank.

Here's my first one I got 2006-May-30, as you can see quite purple, in fact the whole colony was bright purple, but like most LFS 20Ks were the norm. My tank has had 14K and 12K bulbs. It was ID'd as a Becker? Whatever it was I didn't buy it at Becker prices.


Here it is about two and a half months later, as you can see purple is all but gone, green has become predominant on the base.


April-2007 it's really branched out becoming a nice piece, green has gone away quite a bit.


Unfortunately something "bad" happened to my tank, most all of my acros were wiped out, RTN & STN. I thought maybe it'd be AEFW, saw no signs of it anywhere on life or dead corals. Had no idea... however this guy did survive with some careful pruning of the "good flesh) (ok it hack job to break off the unaffected areas). Then I had an outbreak of some bright red "poofy" cotton candy like algae that took many other corals because it'd get stuck between branches then grow and block the light/suffocate them... which this tort unfortunately became a victim though, however again hack job to the rescue, I broke off all the branches that didn't have any and that left me about 3 main pieces, I put them in different areas of the tank, various flows, lighting, etc, plus a few minifrags that I decided to grow out because... what the hell, the worst that can happen is they die.

Here's two of the branches, the first one is "laying down" but under more directly light, the second is "leaning back" and less under the main part of the light.

Now to add some confusion. This is something I grabbed at a frag swap, under "cool white" fluorescent bulbs and flashlights it looked super deep purple in the container. It was simply labeled as "Jim Coral" I've recall hearing names of Excalibur Acro, Gomzi


But after it grew in.. I call it a tort, it might be a gomezi I just am not that good at identification especially between corals that are fairly similar, other than the color is blue


Oh and one more coral... also a tort, won at a raffle as "cali" (but I take any names with a pinch of salt from LFS around this area, just because you own a store doesn't make you an ID expert). So I'm pretty much torted out in my tank. Oh yeah you can see some of that red algae from hell I was talking about!


So yah, lights, nutrient levels, flow all these things are going to affect the color of a coral much more so than any proper name it's given.

Can anyone explain the extreme green hue??? Ive gotten pretty slow growth from this frag as well... IM wondering if the way it is attached to the rock, it leaves very little room for growth over the plug at the base...

Ryan, that looks like a nutrient issueâ€"but then we know you have UL PO4... If your other corals are all fine, maybe dosing some iodide might help with the blue...

I do have lugols, maybe dose 1 drop per week? I don't have an iodide test kit, so dosing that scares me a little...

Yeah, that spooks me too.. But go slow, and watch for color changes in the tort. You can increase if no color changes happen (just like running Zeovit!)

Thanks for the great descriptions between the different Torts. I've been wondering what mine was, and by your description, it looks like a Blue Cali Tort. I find that the greenish / purple hue turns more blue under stronger light. It's definitely a fast grower.

I was at a LFS yesterday buying some ORA frags, and they had two ORA Oregon frags, under Reeflux 12K 400W halides. Wow, I had forgotten how incredible the blue color can be--as someone posted before, Oregon torts are probably the most vivid, rich, and bluest blue colored coral available--really stunning...

They were, however, teeny tiny compared to all the other nicely sized ORA fragsâ€"the Oregons were just single branch (but encrusted) sticks. And you know if ORA can't get them growing any faster, it's aint gunna happen in my living room...!

I believe that Iron helps bring out the green colors, not the blue. Iodide as I understand it helps bring out the blue/purple....

That's been my experienceâ€"but you can tell when either are over-dosed by a green tinge that overtakes yellow corals (acros)... It's often a metallic-eee green tinge...

You know from my PO4 thread that I have now added 2 small fish, and upped my feeding to help increase the nutrients in my tank. Would it be your recommendation to hold off on dosing the iodide until the effects of the increased bio-load are seen?

If it were me, Ryan, I would add one drop right now and go from there... If no problems or no results, go for 2 drops 3-4 day later, etc...
