Hi there,

Please help me, I have a 450g acrylic reef tank that has scratches all on the inside from a magnet that had sand in it.

Can anyone tell me the best way to restore it?

Thanks,

is the tank currently empty? If so there are several kits out there with increasingly fine polishing compounds that will usually get just about anything out with enough elbow grease.

Novus makes the one that usually comes with the tanks I have bought.

I don't know one way or another and a quick search didn't pull it up either. I would plan on draining it for the ease of access. To do it right is not a quick process./

My tank is 5 years old and it's not the scratches that are on issue but a kind of "mottling" that is happening all over. Kind of like the acrylic is getting eaten away by the bacteria and algae. Another few years and I'll be down to 50% visibility. Already at 75% in the bottom quarter of the tank.

If I ever get another tank it will be glass.

my old 300 (acrylic) was in service as a display tank for 12 years and while scuffed up it was still quite useable.

It's now religated to my sump and who knows what it would take to get all the corraline off of it now however.
