calling the goby expert!!!

I have been looking for a red head goby for my 58 lps tank. My local store got in what were listed as red head gobies but they look nothing like any pics i have seen. they are approx 1 inch long very slender body like a catalina goby. they have a white head with 2 red stripes starting at the mouth and going back through the eye. just past the gills the body turns to a lite green with verticle yellow stripes all the way through the rear fin. They do not have the spike of a shrimp goby and they were hanging out under the rocks with their heads sticking out. They are a really cool looking fish, I just want to make sure they will be ok in with my lps. Does anyone ( hint hint Mel!! ) have any idea what kind of goby this sounds like?? If not I will try to go back and get a pic.

Thanks in advance

I believe I just found them...it is a green banded goby. Cool the mystery is over. Hey would anyone know if I could still put one or two red head gobies in with these little guys??

yep...green banded goby. Sorry for my late response. I'm teaching this month so I'm not scouring the internet as much!

Some of these guys have a little bit of a spike if you look closely enough. Man they are so cute...definitely my favorite of the tiny gobies.

They are really cool. I think I will go ahead and get a coupl of them. I might add more later. Have you had a red head goby before? What was your experiance with that fish like? I am really liking the idea of several diff types of gobies in my 58! I may have become goby obsessed!!

I want everyone to become goby obsessed therefore I preach the word to you all every day! hah hah.

Imagine how low your bioload would be if all you had was a bunch of small gobies!

I have had red head gobies before...they are really similar in habits to the green banded gobies but not in such a way that they would have any serious negative interaction. I wouldn't throw like 50 of each in a 58, but you'd be fine with a few green banded gobies and a couple of red heads...or whatever combination of them you choose. They all tend to hang out near the ground in/under rocks. If you make little caves for them you might actually see them pairing off. It's really cool.

If gobies fought like roosters, it would be fun to put them all into a tank and see them have it out... ;)

lol We could set up an open top Jawfish tank with a tape measure running the length of the floor... The Jawfish that jumps the furthest wins the Carpet Surfing contest!!!!!!!

But do you spot the fish where it lands initially or do you let it flop around for say 45 sec or so??? I think that would be the fair way to do this!!LOL!!

yes I did - gave one to bryan and the other one back to the lfs. thanks for asking- I just hope the greenbanded gobies will not do the same thing.
I guess only time will tell...
