Calurpa Taxifola -Should I light it for 24 Hours?

djmuzzi,

I think C. taxifolia is just as likely as most other species to reproduce sexually (involves death of plant and release of caulerprin) although some species / varieties in culture seem less likely to do this. Are you sure what you have is taxifolia and not the more common C. serrulata?

I run my 'fuge lights 24/7 but I don't know if that really reduces the likelyhood of the algae reproducing sexually. I think a key factor in preventing your caulerpa from "going sexual" is being sure it does not run out of nitrates and making sure it does not run out of iron. I would not recommend Caulerpa for a tank that has undetectable nitrates on a test kit. I add 1 cap full of Kent Marine iron supplement / week on my 75 with a 20L 'fuge full of chaeto and a few species of caulerpa in the displa tank.

HTH,
Kevin
