Camera choise and use of old lenses

Hi there,
I plan to buy either Nikon D40, Nikon D40x or Canon 400D.
Which one would you prefer among these three? I dont really plan to buy new lenses and I will use it both for aquarium photographing but mainly for artisting shooting that I can also use photoshop on them (not for proffessional work, just to improve myself)

I also wonder if I can use 20-30 year old lenses? My father used to interested in photography and he has some nice quality slr cameras with different lenses. I was wondering if I can use those lenses on these cameras (I think I cant use it with Nikon D40 as it doesnt have autofocus). If so, would I get the same effect as the new lenses?

I dont currently have all the lenses (as my dad lives in another city), but one of them is Pentacon 1.8/50. I hope that give some idea.

It is my understanding that cameras are mfg specific. Nikon using Nikon mount lenses, Canon, so on and on. However I could be wrong.

I have a Nikon D80 and love it.

i would not recommend the nikon d40 or d40x because they both do not have a internal focus motor and do not work with some lenses. If you don't mind manual focusing then the d40 and d40x will work well with good variety of lenses
