Camera shopping... point and shoot question

Hello,
I want to be able to take some pictures of my reef tank.... however spending $500+ on a decent digital SLR isn't doable right now. Has anybody had experience taking close ups or reef tanks with digital point and shoot cameras? Is this doable in blue lights? Or will the pictures look terrible like they do on my iphone? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance and cheers.

These were all taken with my Canon SX50HS ~$300 Some minor corrections (mainly white balance). I used a DIY look down box for most made out of a piece of 3" PVC and a square of acrylic.

Sansibia actually. I find they are very good at out competing algae for available live rock, without interfering with any other coral's growth. That it's nice looking is just gravy. Also (not that this has ANYTHING to do with it) the wife likes it

just thought id let you know theres a sweet deal on a canon t5 for 350 after rebate. pretty good cyber monday deal going on

I don't really have any experience with P&S cameras and aquarium photography, but one place where P&S can have an edge are the waterproof models. Shooting through water and glass can be difficult, so if you can eliminate the glass and reduce the amount of water, that's a plus. The second thing I'd look for is the ability to keep pictures in raw format as opposed to the camera converting everything to jpg. One of the biggest issues with aquarium photography is color balance, and having a raw photo to work with gives you much more flexibility.

If you do find a good deal on an SLR and decide to go that route, make sure you factor in what lens(es) you're going to want for the results you're looking for. A good macro lens is probably going to run you $500 plus.
