Can a Blue Spot Jawfish live without sand?

I see that people have their BSJF in a DIY PVC barnacle burrow and they aren't going around digging other burrows. So would they eventually get stressed and die if there is no sand or what?

A blue jaw has one need- to make burrows. I would hardly think that a piece of pipe would be acceptable for any amount of time. You can't even keep them with crushed coral substrate, it has to be sand.

jaw fish in general need these things in the order posted

saltwater
sand
food
