Can a dying Colt cause nitrate spike?

Yes. Any time something dies and decomposes in the tank, the amino acids that make up all carbon based lifeforms will eventually break down into nitrates.

okay, I bought a pink colt (quite beautiful) and a few pieces fragged off. Color began to fade slightly and nitrates started going up. Now despite NitraLock resin and carbon filter, nitrates still around 80-120 ppm. The Colt is not dead, not rotting, but I had to ask the question
